Beloved Bronx barber murdered

Beloved Bronx barber murdered

A popular amateur barber was found bludgeoned to death in his Bronx apartment Tuesday, police said.

Pedro Cabrera’s mom, who lives a few blocks away, found his lifeless body about noon, when she came for a visit. He was propped up on his couch and covered with a blanket, police sources said.

Cabrera, 49, was pronounced dead inside his Elliot Place home in Mount Eden, where relatives, friends and neighbors gathered to mourn him. No arrests were made as of last night, officials said.

“He was a friendly person. He was living here for about 20 years. Everyone knew him,” said his nephew Jose Cabrera, 36. “He cut hair in his apartment. He cut everyone’s hair. He had a lot of friends but no enemies.”

Police found no signs of forced entry and no murder weapon. “All he did was cut hair, get his coffee and stay in his house,” said a longtime friend who gave his name only as Carlos.

“Everybody loved him. All the neighborhood is in shock,” said Margarita Minino, Cabrera’s childhood friend. “They must have been looking for somebody to rob. He has no enemies. He was a lovely person.”

Bronx residents, activists protest new tenant harassment law

Bronx residents, activists protest new tenant harassment law

Chanting and waving picket signs, two dozen residents and activists converged on Councilwoman Maria Baez’s office in Mount Hope Tuesday to protest a newly proposed tenant harassment law.

Opponents of Bill 638, which the Democratic councilwoman is sponsoring, said it would give landlords too much power to go after tenants, and would make it harder for tenants to fight back.

The language of the bill, being co-sponsored by Bronx Council Majority Leader and potential candidate for Bronx Borough President Joel Rivera, was largely written by the Rent Stabilization Association group, which represents landlords.

“It’s unfair and very imbalanced,” said Jackie del Valle, of Community Action for Safe Apartments (CASA). “Tenants in [Baez’s] district are the most vulnerable, so we were shocked to learn that she introduced this bill.”

Protester Glenda Poe, 47, feared even those who made simple complaints would be penalized.

“Under this new bill, you can’t even call 311 because you have no lights or hot water because the landlord can accuse you of harassment, whereas the tenants have to prove the landlord intended to harass them,” Poe said. “It’s not right.”

Protester Enrique Colon, 38, suspected a hidden agenda.

“This just makes it easier for the landlord to kick tenants out. Then they can put the rents up to the market rate,” he said. “It’s making it easier to gentrify the area.”

The group wants Baez to instead throw her support behind Bill 627, a similar proposal sponsored by City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and backed by several housing advocates and the rest of the Bronx Council delegation.

In a statement, Baez (D-West Bronx) cautioned that neither bill was a done deal, and said a final version is being negotiated with Quinn and her staff.

“We are having a healthy discussion and debate about both bills,” Baez said in a statement.

Rivera, who also is a Democrat, added that he wanted “all those concerned to understand that we are working hard to ensure that the final draft of this legislation will be fair and balanced to all parties.”

Still, concerns lingered with the protesters.

Local tenant Priscilla Henegan, 64, is expecting the worst, and called the proposed law “no good.”

“The bill Maria Baez signed off can allow landlords to treat us any way they want to treat us,” Henegan said. “It’s not going to protect us at all.”

Today’s Matchup: The Jaspers conclude a three game homestand with the 100th Battle of the Bronx game, as Manhattan hosts boro rival Fordham University on Wednesday, November 28 at 7:00 p.m. Manhattan leads the all-time series, 51-48, and has won 13 of the last 16 meetings in what has been an annual rivalry since the 1922-23 season, with the exception of a two-year hiatus during World War II. The series began in the 1911-12 season, with the Jaspers posting a 20-19 victory. Last season, the Rams posted a 70-66 win. Jamel Ferguson tallied 15 points, seven rebounds, and three assists for the Jaspers, while Patrick Bouli pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.

What’s Next?: Following today’s game, the Jaspers head to Boston, Mass. to take on the Boston University Terriers on Saturday, December 1. Boston University leads the all-time series, 4-1, with the lone Manhattan win coming in the 1941-42 season, a 56-43 Jasper victory. Last season, the Terriers posted a 74-65 win at Draddy Gymnasium. All five Manhattan starters reached double-figured in the game, paced by Darryl Crawford’s 17 points on 6-7 shooting from the field and 4-5 shooting from the line.

All-time record: Manhattan is in its 102nd season of men’s basketball. The Jaspers’ overall record is 1206-1041 (.537), while the team has posted a 201-202 (.499) record over 26 seasons of MAAC play. The men’s basketball program was established in 1904-05 and has taken two seasons off (1943-44 and 1944-45) due to World War II. In 55 of the program’s 101-plus seasons, including the four of the last six seasons, the Jaspers have posted a .500 or better record. Manhattan’s 200 MAAC wins makes them just the second MAAC team to reach 200 wins in conference, joining Iona College.
