South Bronx communities benefit from public, private funds

Deputy Mayor Dan Doctoroff, in charge of the city’s economic development, looks at Bronx neighborhoods as a model for economic development and change.

“This amount of development and growth is absolutely unprecedented in the recent history of the Bronx,” says Doctoroff. “It shows how city-inspired public programs like improving streets, building parks, monitoring zoning and increasing transportation options can create the kind of conditions where private investment can flourish.”

Pointing at the new Metro-North station and the increase in retail for the GatewayCenter by the old Bronx Terminal Market, Doctoroff says it’s the job of city government to create environments that encourage the private market (meaning companies that operate for profit) to invest in the community. Here’s how and where that policy has impacted the South Bronx.

Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion has high hopes for change

For someone who says he hates politics, Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion is good at it. Since he took office in 2001, Carrion has increased total investment in the Bronx from $400 million in 2001 to almost $6 billion today, has raised property value by 40% and reduced unemployment by 6%.

Housing happens to be his primary concern. Since Carrion took office, $2.2 billion has been invested in residential real estate, 40% of the borough president’s budget has gone to housing development and 35,000 new units have been built, 15,000 of which are classified affordable.

“I really do hate politics,” says Carrion. “But I love people, I love New York, and I love building a stronger, more beautiful city where people have opportunity.”

South Bronx: A historic section of the borough blossoms once again

Having more to do with housing prices than hip hop, the “Boogie Down Bronx” around the Grand Concourse continues to be a red-hot real estate market. Standing on the steps of the hulking gray Bronx courthouse, looking at the prewar buildings lining Walton Ave. and the cranes constructing the new Yankee Stadium, it’s clear why.

“There hasn’t been this much building in the Bronx since the 1920s,” says Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrión. “At my inauguration, I said, ‘The Bronx is open for business.’ People are working here, they’re building here and, best of all, people are moving here.”
