Buses Bloom In The Bronx

Buses Bloom In The Bronx

bus_after-crop.jpg

Bx12 Select buses greeted attendees of the “Buses in the Boroughs” symposium Tuesday morning.

With spring colors and fragrance in full bloom at the New York Botanical Garden Tuesday morning, TSTC along with Transportation Alternatives, the Straphangers Campaign, and the Pratt Center for Community Development hosted a symposium on bus rapid transit to showcase how this transit option has transformed major cities around the world and to preview New York’s plans for BRT throughout the five boroughs.

Walter Hook and Oscar Edmundo Diaz, both of the Institute for Transportation & Development Policy, discussed BRT systems in nearly two dozen cities around the world (both presentations are available on TSTC’s website). Hook’s presentation spanned multiple systems and highlighted some technical “dos and don’ts” for BRT providers (such as the advantages of median bus lanes, the need for multiple-door buses, how to fit BRT into narrow streets, etc.). His presentation drew on the broad and detailed knowledge of ITDP, which consults governments around the world in planning BRT systems and produces an 850-page BRT Planning Guide.

Diaz, a native of Colombia and a specialist in urban transport systems, focused on what many consider the world’s most successful BRT system, the TransMilenio of Bogota, Colombia. TransMilenio can carry up to 42,000 passengers per hour per direction and travels an average 18.1 mph, more than twice as fast as the average bus in NYC. It is top-of-the-line BRT, with pre-boarding fare collection, level boarding at platforms, and enclosed stations — a worthy transit system for a city of 7 million. Of course, the quickest way to get a sense of TransMilenio is through pictures:

Diaz emphasized how a well-built system can dramatically improve the lives of commuters and residents who lack transit access, and as a result, economic and social opportunity. While 21% of TransMilenio riders own cars, the system is also accessible to low-income commuters, mothers with children in tow, the handicapped, and the elderly. In surveys, the #1 reason TransMilenio riders said they liked the system was because it allowed them to spend more time with their families. Read more..

A Sidewalk Pope in the Bronx

A Sidewalk Pope in The Bronx

carmelbooks.jpg

Pope Benedict XVI will be in the Bronx on Sunday morning when he celebrates Mass at Yankee Stadium. But a short distance away, he has been making appearances all week on the sidewalk in front of the Mount Carmel Catholic Book Shop, at 627 East 187th Street.

It is actually his cardboard likeness, placed in front of the store by Neil Fusco, a co-owner of the shop. Judged by the reactions of passers-by, it pleases many people with no tickets to any pope-related events this weekend. They speak to the pope’s likeness or genuflect or stop and pay their respects, on this block next to the many Italian restaurants and bakeries on Arthur Avenue.

“For a lot of people, it’s as close as they’re going to come to meeting the pope,” Mr. Fusco said.

“Everyone wants a piece of the pope while he’s here,” he added.

Aside from communing with the life-size cutout, one can also connect with the pope by stepping inside the shop and picking up a memento of the pope’s visit.

Mr. Fusco is selling “Property of Pope Benedict” T-shirts and “I Love Pope Benedict” bumper stickers, as well as coffee mugs and aromatic “Pope-Pourri” pillows bearing the pope’s likeness. The stuff has been going like hotcakes, he said. It is a perfect example of how the pope offers spiritual guidance but also lets his followers with their livelihoods.

“He’s really providing for us,” Mr. Fusco said.

At Least 12 Hurt In Suspicious Fire

At Least 12 Hurt In Suspicious Fire

A suspicious third-alarm fire that tore through two Bronx homes prompted “heroic” fire rescues as residents leapt for their lives from windows

Eyewitness News is told the fire broke out inside one multi-family home at 4057 Lowerre Place, in the borough’s Williamsbridge section, and spread to the house next door.

Flames could be seen shooting out of three first floor windows when firefighters arrived just before 2 a.m. this morning.

An infant and woman were rescued from the flames in what one fire official described as “heroic efforts.”

Other residents leapt from the rear windows to safety. One resident sustained a broken ankle from jumping out the window.

Officials say in all, four residents and eight firefighters were treated. All the injuries were non-life threatening.

Fire marshals are investigating the cause of the fire, which is being considered suspicious. Read more..

Council Member In Funding Flap

Council Member In Funding Flap

arroyo.jpg

Bronx City Council member Maria Del Carmen Arroyo has a unique way to get taxpayer support for her family.

Last year she sponsored $82,500 in Council “discretionary funds” into a nonprofit that employed both her sister and nephew, the Daily News has learned.

Arroyo’s sister, Iris, was “fiscal officer” for the South Bronx Community Corp., where a former employee accused her of incompetence that led to thousands of dollars of federal liens filed against the group.

Iris Arroyo’s son, Richard Izquierdo, was also listed as an executive at the agency; he claims he’s not paid.

The Arroyos’ arrangement comes as the feds charged two staffers of City Council member Kendall Stewart on Wednesday with embezzling discretionary funds through their nonprofit.

No one has been charged with a crime in the funding of the nonprofit that employed Arroyo’s relatives, and Stewart himself has not been charged with a crime.

Each City Council member is given a set amount to spend annually on “discretionary” items that are usually pet nonprofit causes within their districts.

Stewart’s aides were charged with siphoning off $145,000 in such funds through a nonprofit he funded.

Council member Arroyo is the former director of South Bronx Community Corp., which purports to “provide various services to the elderly, disabled and low income families” in the Bronx. Her mother, Assemblywoman Carmen Arroyo, was director of the nonprofit years before.

In her Council biography, the younger Arroyo claims to have been a “volunteer” at South Bronx, though records show her collecting $33,000 to $45,000 a year in 2001 and 2002.

She left the nonprofit after being elected to the Council in February 2005. Early last year, she was co-sponsor of a $75,000 “member item” and sole sponsor of a $7,500 member item for South Bronx Community Corp., records show.

Arroyo confirmed Wednesday she’d sponsored the money for the group, but insisted it was allocated only after her sister, Iris, and Iris’ son, Richard, had left.

“I know that when the Council discretionary funds were allocated, I know that they were no longer there,” she said.

Nevertheless, she couldn’t say when her sister left. As of February 2007, Iris Arroyo was signing tax documents as the group’s “fiscal officer,” records show.

Also the group received $50,000 in discretionary funds in 2006, although at the time sponsors were not publicly listed. Read more..

City Unveils Another Hard-Hitting ‘Don’t Smoke’ Ad

City Unveils Another Hard-Hitting ‘Don’t Smoke’ Ad

no_fingers.jpg

The star of the Health Department antismoking campaign’s latest ad is Marie from the Bronx, whose smoking-related illness led to a number of amputations.

First, the city introduced us to the man who could only talk through a hole in his throat. Then, we met the sad children of dying smokers. Now, we meet the woman who is missing four fingers (and bits of at least three more).

In its increasingly graphic (and perhaps effective?) antismoking campaign, the city’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene continues to highlight the perils of extreme smoking-related health conditions. In this case, it is profiling a Bronx woman — Marie, who has had nearly 20 amputations — to coincide with its free nicotine patch giveaway that will last from now until May 1.

A series of somewhat gruesome television commercials shows close-ups of Marie’s amputated fingers, shaded out images of the human anatomy representing her amputated body parts, a sinister bone saw and a mysterious set of clippers. The bone saw and clippers are the actual ones used in Marie’s amputations. The photos of the medical instruments were taken at her doctor’s office.

According to the Health Department, Marie developed Buerger’s disease, a condition that narrows arteries, reducing blood flow to the arms and legs. She has lost parts of most fingers, as well as a leg and a part of one foot. In the commercial she recounts going to the emergency room because she was in so much pain. She pauses, then says, “And that’s when the amputations began.”

The advertisements began today on television, radio and the Internet, in taxi cabs and in the New York City subway cars. Read more..
