Bronx borough president Adolfo Carrión promoting bicycle use

Borough President Adolfo Carrión wants to rack ‘em up.

He’s launched a drive to make the Bronx more bicycle-friendly by getting more bike racks.

A new report, “Bike the Bronx,” calls for exploring locations where bike racks could be installed. It urges residents, community groups and businesses to ask the city Department of Transportation to install more of them in their neighborhoods.

The report was released as 5,000 biking fans turned out Oct. 19 for the annual Tour de Bronx.

With high rates of asthma from traffic on the borough’s major highways, diabetes from obesity and the high cost of gas and maintaining cars, the report says using a bike to exercise and commute to work is a triple-winner.

It cites statistics showing the Bronx has the largest number of people in the city who drive short distances alone to work, saying that with more convenient bike racks installed, that number could be significantly lowered.

“If ever there was a time to make the Bronx and all of New York City a friendlier place for bicycling, it is now,” said Carrión. Read more..

Bronx Asks, Is There No Parking on Mars?

Bronx residents are saying shooting for “Life On Mars” is causing parking problems. For some New Yorkers, the news that an American remake of an award-winning British television series was being shot in their neighborhood might be cause for celebration. But residents of the Amalgamated Houses, a sprawling cooperative in the northwest Bronx, are indignant about the loss of almost 400 on-street parking spaces on Monday and Tuesday, caused by the taping of ABC’s “Life on Mars” in their otherwise quiet neighborhood.

The Amalgamated is home to more than a few old-time lefties and activists, and the residents did not take this meekly. Upon learning of the shoot on Thursday, they began lobbying local politicians and officials for a quick fix that would allow them to park a few blocks away. They got their wish — permission to park on Goulden Avenue, a desolate stretch between the reservoir and De Witt Clinton High School, with a security guard and a shuttle service provided by the co-op.

Ed Yaker, 64, a former co-op president and longtime resident of the Amalgamated, said building management spent most of Friday making phone calls to ease the parking squeeze. “If we didn’t have an organized community where we have an office that can make calls, what would have happened?” he asked. “Tough luck parking in your own neighborhood, that’s what.”

Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz, a Democrat who represents the area, helped reach out to the authorities to shift the time of the parking ban from Sunday night to early Monday.

“This is good for the city to have shows filmed here, but you can’t given them a blank check,” Mr. Dinowitz said. “Taking away people’s parking for two days is absurd.” Read more..

NEW YORK - Sandra Izaguirre was named Most Valuable Player of the 2008 City University of New York Athletic Conference Community College Women’s Volleyball Championships Monday night at Borough of Manhattan Community College, as she lifted the second-seeded Bronx Community College Broncos to their first-ever conference title with a 3-1 victory (16-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-21) over the host and top-seeded Panthers.

New Yankee Stadium puts up championship numbers for the Bronx

The Bronx is witnessing a period of remarkable economic revitalization.

From the Gateway Center at Bronx Terminal Market to the Mayor’s initiative to spur investment in the South Bronx, the past couple of years have brought unprecedented development to the borough.

Yankee Stadium is part of this historic rejuvenation.

Unfortunately, the extensive benefits of the stadium project to the people of the Bronx and to the city have been overlooked or not reported at all.
RELATED: WEINER’S PITCH TO FIX BUDGET

Even a cursory examination of these benefits, though, demonstrates why the city committed to this project in the first place. It’s time to set the record straight.

Like the Yankees’ 26 world championships, the stats on this project are staggering.

- More than 6,000 mostly unionized construction jobs, with a quarter of the man-hours performed by Bronx residents.

- More than 1,000 new, mostly unionized permanent jobs. New and expanded park space.

- New parking garages that take cars off congested streets.

- A new Metro-North station.

- Plus, $40million in new tax revenue for the city, according to the analysis done when the project was approved. And the list goes on.

Nobody in his or her right mind would criticize these benefits. Read more..
