Rogue Bronx pol never registered campaign committee

ALBANY - An incoming Bronx state senator failed to register a campaign committee with the state as required by law, the Daily News has learned.

The News recently reported that Senator-elect Pedro Espada Jr. had missed all five required financial disclosures for his campaign this year.

Yesterday, state Board of Elections spokesman Robert Brehm said Espada hasn’t even bothered to register his campaign committee.

By not registering and making the proper filings, it’s impossible to tell who financed his campaign and how the money was spent.

Making things more confusing is that the senator-elect has a registered political action committee called “Espada for the People” that can receive and make donations, but is prohibited from making direct expenditures for a campaign, Brehm said.

There is no paperwork filed to make it clear whether the PAC is tied to Espada’s Senate race, Brehm said. Read more..

Lady Jaspers Drop “Battle of the Bronx,” 62-49

BRONX, N.Y. – The annual “Battle of the Bronx” between Manhattan and Fordham was held on Wednesday night at Rose Hill Gym.  The Lady Jaspers (1-2) stormed back from an 11-point first half deficit to take the lead in the second half, but the Rams (1-1) proved too tough in the end and posted a 62-49 victory.  With the win, Fordham snapped a 35-game losing streak.
In each of their first two games, the Lady Jaspers built a big first-half lead, but this time it was the Rams who created the early cushion.  After Annie McIntyre (Portland, Ore.) drained a three on Manhattan’s opening possession, Fordham scored the next eight points to take an 8-5 lead.  The Rams’ advantage reached 11 points when Megan Mahoney sank a trey to make it 20-9 with 10:40 left in the half.  Randall Hurst hit a jumper to give Fordham a 22-11 edge with 8:58 remaining before halftime. Seven Businesses Damaged In Bronx Blaze

A three-alarm blaze raged in the Morrisania section of the Bronx Wednesday evening, destroying seven businesses.

Fire officials say it started just before 4:15 p.m. in a store called First Class Cleaners on Southern Boulevard.

The owner saw the smoke and flames, evacuated his business, and then alerted everyone else on the block.

“I saw smoke coming from the roof and all of a sudden it just spread out because of the wind and it all grew heavy,” said a local resident.

It took more than 100 firefighters to put out the flames, but not before a row of seven stores were burned down. Residents say among the destroyed stores were a barber shop, grocery store, and well-known pet shop.

Firefighters were able to rescue two cats, four lizards, and a parrot, but dozens of other animals in the shop perished. Read more..

New Sounds: The Bronx

New Sounds: The Bronx

Honestly, can you believe how exciting this band is? It’s like listening to a car chase. The slowdowns and speed ups are all perfectly timed to maximize your listening pleasure and get your heart rate go, go, going. It’s like I can feel people slamming into me, their bodies slimy with sweat, and I just got punched in the face and my glasses broke and I could give a shit. It sounds like they are just absolutely desperate to rock out for you, like if you don’t listen they are going to come to your house and wake your ass up and plug their instruments straight into your brail.

Ordering Out for More Space

AFTER years of living with their son in a 900-square-foot bungalow, Regina and Bill Marengo wanted a bigger place. There was no room on their small plot of land to expand outward, and the existing foundation could not support another floor. Still, they were not about to give up their spot in the Locust Point neighborhood of the Bronx, with its spectacular views of Long Island Sound.
