Pirates’ mastery proves too strong for Bronx Science

Victoria House is lone Bronx Science golfer to record win in PSAL semifinal loss to Tottenville on Thursday.

Bronx Science junior Victoria House finished the season undefeated, even though the Wolverines fell one match short of playing for the championship in today’s PSAL golf final.

House, the Wolverines’ No. 1 golfer, won her match last Thursday in the semifinals, edging Tottenville Alyssa Kuhn 2-0 at Dyker Beach GC in Brooklyn. It was the Wolverines’ only win in a 4-1 loss to the defending champs.

“I didn’t have big expectations or anything; it definitely is intimidating facing Tottenville,” said House, who brushed aside her nerves and improved her personal record to 10-0. “I’m really proud of our team, and I was really happy that we came this far.” Read more..

South Bronx finishes undefeated after off-season filled with tragedy

Showalter for News

Howard Gomez and South Bronx enter playoffs on high note after rolling past Evander, 44-12 in regular season finale.

South Bronx running back Raymond Norman has always kept his father close to his heart.

Michael Norman lost a battle with colon cancer and died in early July, but Raymond has honored his biggest fan by helping to drive South Bronx to perfection on the football field.

Norman’s three first-half touchdowns on Sunday - two rushing and one receiving - led the Phoenix to a 44-12 victory in their regular season finale over Evander (5-3) at Alfred E. Smith HS. The victory gave South Bronx a 9-0 finish.

South Bronx continued to showcase the reasons for its dominance this season, taking a 28-0 lead into halftime and easily capping the victory to go undefeated for the first time in school history. Read more..

Bronx Is Solid Obama Country

Bronx County is considered Barack Obama territory. The Democratic borough, which no longer has any Republican elected officials, is expected to turn out in big numbers.

“I’m going to vote for Obama,” said a voter on Fordham Road. “We need a change, it’s about time. For all of us, not only me.”

Along Fordham Road, voters said they were diehard in their support of getting the Democratic nominee into the White House.

“I really do think the country needs a change,” said another voter. “And quite honestly, Sarah Palin scares the hell out of me and if she is that close to the White House, we can’t have that.
It is definitely Barack Obama and Joe Biden, go Democrats.”

“I don’t agree with the whole big business, trickle-down economy kind of stuff,” said a third voter. “I believe that you have to start from the bottom up and build it up.”

Bruce Berg, a Fordham political science professor, says the economic crisis is a big factor for Bronx voters.

“Given the fact that for every Wall Street job that is lost, there are going to be two or three others jobs lost. And I suspect many of those are held by Bronx residents,” said Berg. “I suspect that there is a great motivation by the citizens of the Bronx to get out and vote for candidates that are promising to address those issues.”

There are 539,976 registered Democrats in the Bronx, compared to 51,457 Republicans. Read more..

Voting in the South Bronx, Names Not on Lists, Few Choices on Paper Ballots

SOUTH BRONX, November 4 — The grandeur of the right to vote, at least for some in New York’s South Bronx on November 4, was tawdry, disorganized and gave little confidence even that votes would be counted. A long-time polling place in a public school on Southern Boulevard was locked shut, with no signs directing those who arrived to vote as they had in past years to any new location. A security guard ambled over and pointed across a parking lot at another school.

“It’s there this year,” he said. But there were two locked fences between the two schools, requiring a search for two sets of keys. The excited chatter about Democratic nominee Barack Obama was quickly changing to complaints about the NYC Board of Elections, even, against Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

The previous day at City Hall in Manhattan, speaker after speaker excoriated Bloomberg for overriding term limits to seek the Mayoralty for a third time next year. Brooklyn Councilman Charles Barron called it a “disgrace,” and told the nonplussed Bloomberg “I’ll see you on the battlefield.” A pedi-cab cyclists trashed both Bloomberg and the treatment of carriage horses. A rabbi was wheeled out to praise the Mayor. In these times of financial crisis, it was said, we need him. In this case, apparently, the Change We Can Believe In is just four more years of the same.

Bronx Seniors Roll to the Polls

WAITING GAME: Seniors from Kittay Home wait in line to vote at the Jewish Home and Hospital on West Kingsbridge Road in the Bronx on November 4; 2008.

Bronx

As a long line of wheel chairs strolled into the Jewish Home and Hospital on West Kingsbridge Road, a smiling volunteer lifted a black curtain and let them in to vote.

“I’ve voted for a president who believes in God and life,” said Mary Gamory, 82. “Obama voted two times for abortion.”

Gamory was one of several senior citizens who filed into the voting station to cast their ballots. Most of the voters who filled the polling site were well past the age of retirement - some disabled, and some even on stretchers. Read more..
