Yankees dig deep to keep pace with Rays

The Yankees are engaging in a monumental quest that had never been considered in all their years as baseball’s baddest boys from the Bronx.

The Babe, Iron Horse and Joltin’ Joe never imagined this far-out mission. Neither did Yogi, Whitey nor the Mick. Ditto for Thurm, Mr. October and Donnie Baseball.

The Yankees’ new goal, as wacky as it sounds: keeping up with a team from St. Petersburg, Fla., the mighty Rays.

Even Joe Torre never could have dreamed up something so goofy.

Not surprisingly, the Yankees are convinced the best way to dig themselves out of third place, after missing the playoffs for the first time since 1993, is to throw the biggest money at the biggest free agent, and their focus is CC Sabathia, the pitching jewel of the open market. Read more..

Driver killed in Warren on Interstate 78

A commuter van crashed early Saturday morning on Interstate 78, killing its driver and injuring four passengers, police said.

Julio Pina, 49, of the Bronx, N.Y., was driving westbound around 6:40 a.m. when he ran his 1998 Ford van off the road, hitting a light pole, a sign and coming to rest against a tree, according to state police spokesman Sgt. Steve Jones.

He suffered a leg injury and a broken neck and was declared dead at the scene.

Neither Pina nor the four passengers riding with him were wearing seat belts. All were taken to Morristown Memorial Hospital and were in stable condition Saturday afternoon, Jones said.

One of the passengers, Hector Cintron, 20, of the Bronx, N.Y., suffered a head injury and was found unconscious by emergency personnel responding to the scene. Another occupant, Jose Alameda, 68, of Allentown, PA, also suffered a head
injury.

Cesarini Santos, 27, a passenger in the van from New York had substantial injuries, Jones said, and was partially unconscious when the ambulance personnel found her. Mayra Laracuente, 29, of the Bronx, N.Y., suffered minor injuries. Read more..

At Last, Fortune Shines on St. John’s

St. John’s had not yet opened its men’s basketball season against Long Island University on Friday, and the Red Storm was already off to a solid start.

That was because Omari Lawrence, a 6-foot-4 shooting guard rated as one of the top 100 players in the high school class of 2009, had made his commitment to St. John’s official by signing his letter of intent on Thursday.

On Friday, with Lawrence among the 4,914 in attendance, life got a little better for the Red Storm when it won its first game of the season, 73-63, over L.I.U. in the newly renovated Carnesecca Arena.

Lawrence signed the letter of intent at center court of the gym at the Mullally Park Recreation Center in the Bronx, in front of dozens of watching children. It was a big moment for Lawrence, as well as for the Red Storm, which is trying to reinvigorate its program in New York City’s rich high school basketball scene. Read more..

Majora Carter, Sustainable South Bronx Founder, to Lecture

Majora Carter

                                                                                                Majora Carter

Majora Carter, founder of Sustainable South Bronx, will present a lecture titled “Green the Ghetto - Why, How and What Happens if We Don’t,” on Tuesday, Nov. 18, at 7:30 p.m. in the Hamilton College Chapel. The lecture, which is sponsored by the Diversity and Social Justice Project, is free and open to the public.

Born and raised in the South Bronx, it is Carter’s philosophy that people shouldn’t have to move out of their neighborhood to live in a better one. With this idea in mind, Carter founded the non-profit environmental justice corporation Sustainable South Bronx in 2001. Her first project was drafting a $1.25 million federal transportation planning grant for the South Bronx Greenway, which eventually led to the first new South Bronx waterfront park in more than 60 years. Carter also worked to alleviate poverty via the Bronx Environmental Stewardship Training program, a division of Sustainable South Bronx. The training program is one of the nation’s first and most effective green-collar job training and placement systems. Read more..
