A commuter van crashed early Saturday morning on Interstate 78, killing its driver and injuring four passengers, police said.
Julio Pina, 49, of the Bronx, N.Y., was driving westbound around 6:40 a.m. when he ran his 1998 Ford van off the road, hitting a light pole, a sign and coming to rest against a tree, according to state police spokesman Sgt. Steve Jones.
He suffered a leg injury and a broken neck and was declared dead at the scene.
Neither Pina nor the four passengers riding with him were wearing seat belts. All were taken to Morristown Memorial Hospital and were in stable condition Saturday afternoon, Jones said.
One of the passengers, Hector Cintron, 20, of the Bronx, N.Y., suffered a head injury and was found unconscious by emergency personnel responding to the scene. Another occupant, Jose Alameda, 68, of Allentown, PA, also suffered a head
injury.
Cesarini Santos, 27, a passenger in the van from New York had substantial injuries, Jones said, and was partially unconscious when the ambulance personnel found her. Mayra Laracuente, 29, of the Bronx, N.Y., suffered minor injuries.
The van is owned by RP Transportation, a company with locations in Allentown and New York and police said Pina was an employee.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation by the state police’s fatal accident and crime scene
