Building a mess of trouble Yelps of anger for animal shelter

The fur is flying over the future of the old Fordham Library.

The city-owned building recently was transferred to the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene for use as an animal shelter - with the local community board and others charging the city pulled a fast one.

Many people feel the Bronx is overdue for a full-service animal shelter, but residents and local leaders argue the building, on Bainbridge Ave., just north of Fordham Road, is desperately needed as a community center.

“We were reaching out, we were laying out our case, and the city just decided they were going to do this without consulting anyone,” said Greg Faulkner, chairman of Community Board 7.

The city was required by law to have a licensed, full-service animal shelter in each borough by 2006, but the Bronx has none.

But the latest plan for a shelter, to be run by Animal Care and Control, could be put on hold for at least two years as budget cuts squeeze its resources. Read more..

Yankees to play Cubs in first exhibition at new park

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The New York Yankees will play their first exhibition games at the new Yankee Stadium against the Chicago Cubs on April 3-4, the team announced on Monday.

The Friday-Saturday clashes will be the Yankees’ first pre-season exhibition games in the Bronx for 15 years.

“As we welcome our fans into the ballpark for the first time, it is fitting to showcase two of baseball’s greatest and most historic franchises,” Yankees co-owner Hal Steinbrenner said in a statement.

The two-game exhibition marks the return of 2008 National League manager-of-the-year Lou Piniella, who played outfield at Yankee Stadium for 11 seasons, was a member of two World Series championship teams and served as Yankees’ manager from 1986-88. Read more..

The WCS is moving its evening light show event to a daytime experience, called HESS Presents the Bronx Zoo’s Wild Winterland sponsored by PEPSI, which will lessen energy consumption and continue a long-time family holiday tradition.

Beginning weekends only, December 6 through December 21, and then daily from December 22 until January 4, 2009, Bronx Zoo guests can experience a slice of holiday fun from 11:30 a.m. to
3:30 p.m.

An added attraction this year: Clydesdale horses. Three handsome Clydesdale horses, Jesse, Monty and Ranger, along with four spirited reindeer, will create the new “footprint”– making for a truly wild encounter. Darrell Rasner Era Ends in The Bronx

MLB, AL East, New York Yankees, Darrell Rasner, Editorial

I was sad to learn that Darrell Rasner will no longer pitch for the New York Yankees. No, seriously.

He did have his good moments with the Bronx Bombers, but admittedly, overall they were few and far between.

As a graduate of the University of Nevada, located in my newly adopted home state, I was pulling for him.

The Yankees reached an agreement to sell the contract of the righty pitcher to the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles of Japan’s Pacific League for $1 million

I guess that extra million in the Steinbrenners’ coffers can help offset the $140 million currently being offered to free agent pitcher CC Sabathia.

CD Review: The Bronx

Hardcord punks prove that aggression can be the answer

In a world where bands like Nickelback pass for good rock music, it’s hard to have faith that there are bands out there still trying to create straightforward rock music without a pop agenda.

The music world should be eternally grateful to bands like The Bronx that are still trying to keep real alternative genres alive. Ever since its emergence in the early 1980s, the hardcore punk scene has shocked and rattled a crowd yearning for the pure punk of classic bands like The Stooges. When punk died, we were left with… disco. Hardcore punks then shook the world back into reality with thrashing guitars and relentless rhythm sections. Read more..
