The Lady Jaspers (1-1) conclude their season-opening three-game road swing tonight with a short trip across town to face Fordham (0-1) in the annual “Battle of the Bronx.” Manhattan dropped a 71-68 decision at Massachusetts on Sunday afternoon, while Fordham, which was picked 14th in the Atlantic 10 preseason poll, lost its season opener 69-57 to Princeton on Friday night. Taking the reduce, reuse and recycle initiative, The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) is making this holiday season a “greener” one at the Bronx Zoo by reducing their carbon footprint.
The WCS announced this week that they will transition an evening light show event to a daytime experience, called “HESS Presents the Bronx Zoo’s Wild Winterland” which will lessen energy consumption and hope to continue a long-time family holiday tradition in New York.
Beginning weekends only, December 6 through December 21, and then daily from December 22 until January 4, 2009, Bronx Zoo guests can experience a slice of holiday fun from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Read more..

The coast is clear of rats now, here in the daylight. But at night, this Walton Ave. alley is hopping with rats.
Rats are usually pretty good at hiding, but the city has a new weapon that shines a light on them in the Bronx and across the city.
A new Health Department Web site called the Rat Information Portal — or RIP — maps citywide data on rat inspections by borough, community board, zip code and even specific addresses, so residents can find out the extent of infestation in their neighborhoods, and track what the city is doing about it.
When checking specific addresses, users can see not only how that property fared in recent city inspections, but how neighboring properties did as well, providing an early-warning system to head off an infestation’s spread.
“Sometimes, rats will be visible in one building, but the real source may be elsewhere,” said DOH Assistant Commissioner Dan Kass. Read more..

A lotta folks have been wondering just how much money the Bronx Democratic Party (the old one) has left in the kitty.
If the Rainbow Rebels should win that court fight, new chairman Carl Heastie will have to apply his master’s degree in finance looking over the party’s books, which we hear are sliding toward the red column.
Then, there’s the legal bill for fighting the rebel challenge in court.
