A three-alarm blaze raged in the Morrisania section of the Bronx Wednesday evening, destroying seven businesses.
Fire officials say it started just before 4:15 p.m. in a store called First Class Cleaners on Southern Boulevard.
The owner saw the smoke and flames, evacuated his business, and then alerted everyone else on the block.
“I saw smoke coming from the roof and all of a sudden it just spread out because of the wind and it all grew heavy,” said a local resident.
It took more than 100 firefighters to put out the flames, but not before a row of seven stores were burned down. Residents say among the destroyed stores were a barber shop, grocery store, and well-known pet shop.
Firefighters were able to rescue two cats, four lizards, and a parrot, but dozens of other animals in the shop perished.
“I feel sorry for all the animals because that is the first thing that God made. And you got to have mercy for them,” said another area resident. “I’m very sorry.”
Three firefighters suffered minor injuries battling the flames.
Service on the elevated Number 2 and 5 lines was suspended for about three hours.
