New York Fire Department to Make Cutbacks

NEW YORK — Fewer firefighters will be hired, training will be reduced and four companies will be closed overnight due to the city’s financial crisis, Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta said Thursday.

“It’s no secret we’re facing very hard economic times,” Mr. Scoppetta said at a news conference. The FDNY is trying to trim $60 million from its budget as the city faces a multibillion dollar shortfall in the coming years.

As part of the measure, the nation’s largest fire department will close four companies overnight that cover areas of Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx and Staten Island. Read more..

Spare Times

The economy is tanking, the winter doldrums are setting in, and the tourists and the family are descending, but don’t let that bring you down: pull yourself up by your skinny jeans and hit BowieBall, a glittery, wild-haired, wild-eyed party in honor of the Thin White Duke, in all his gender-bending glory.

Deryck Todd, an artist, fashion designer and David Bowie lover, came up with the idea a few years ago when he was casting about for a party theme. (“I’m a big fan of alliteration,” Mr. Todd, 28, said.) It was an instant hit: by the second ball, at Don Hill’s, there was a line around the block, and the event has been attracting the zip-up-jumpsuit crowd ever since. “It’s gay, it’s straight, it’s bi, it’s hipster, it’s people who are trying to get in with a fake ID, and people who saw Bowie in 1968 in London,” Mr. Todd said. He added, “Bowie gave a voice to so many people, to inspire them to be individuals, to challenge who they are, to pretend they are from other planets and get away with it.” Read more..

Three Schools Are Told They Will Be Shut Down

Department of Education officials informed teachers and administrators at three schools on Thursday that they would soon be shuttered, arguing that their failures to make gains among struggling students called for radical repair.

The three — Public School 90 in the Bronx, Public School 225 in Queens, and Junior High School 44 in Manhattan — are among several schools the city plans to close, with the others being notified in the coming weeks.

J.H.S. 44 will be phased out over two years, allowing current students to graduate but not accepting new ones. At the same time, new sixth graders will enter a reconstituted middle school, under different leadership, in the same building.

P.S. 90 will be replaced by two new elementary schools, initially serving kindergarten through second grade and expanding to fourth grade by 2011. Read more..
