Between Heaven and Earth, Room for Ambiguity

Doubt

The air is thick with paranoia in “Doubt,” but nowhere as thick, juicy, sustained or sustaining as Meryl Streep’s performance as a distrustful nun in John Patrick Shanley’s screen adaptation of his stage play. Wearing flowing black robes, a bonnet that squats on her head like an upside-down Easter basket and the kind of spectacles Mr. Pickwick probably wore to read his papers, Ms. Streep blows in like a storm, shaking up the story’s reverential solemnity with gusts of energy and comedy. The performance may make no sense in the context of the rest of the film, but it is — forgive me, Father — gratifying nunsense.

Although the play, which pivots on accusations of child molestation, was first staged in 2004 — two years after the Roman Catholic Church sex-abuse scandals erupted in America — it unfolds at a historical remove in 1964. Sister Aloysius (Ms. Streep), the principal of a Catholic school in the Bronx, comes to suspect that her supervisor, Father Flynn (a tamped-down Philip Seymour Hoffman), has developed an erotic interest or worse in one of their charges, Donald (Joseph Foster II), the school’s first and only black student. Shored up by the tentative suspicions of a younger nun, Sister James (an unsteady Amy Adams), Sister Aloysius begins circling Father Flynn, going in for the kill. Sister James has doubts. Sister Aloysius has, well, none. Read more..

Wings junior guard Latasia Ward had 27 points to lead her team to a big win against South Bronx on Thursday. Photo by Damion Reid
It’s pretty early, but the turning point for the Wings Academy girls’ basketball team may have already occurred. The Wings started the season with two PSAL Bronx A losses – to Columbus and Bronx HS of Science – in their first four games and then coach Juan L. Gonzalez went “back to the drawing board.”

“Those were two losses that should have never happened,” he said. Read more..

Pete Wentz says he won’t peddle pics of baby Baby Bronx

Pete Wentz writes in his blog that he and wife Ashlee Simpson-Wentz have no plans to “pimp out the baby.” Not that there’s anything wrong with selling photos of your vulnerable infant to the higest bidder, he hastens to add.

Responding to a New York Post report that the couple couldn’t get a high enough price for the snaps of baby Bronx Mowgli, Wentz writes, “Like every celeb couple, we were offered mounds and mounds of money by mags, from here to Guam, to pimp out the baby. We just don’t want to go down that road with him. We are not placing judgment on those that do, as they often use the money in a very charitable way.”

Toll-Free Bridges Already “Tough” on South Bronx and Upper Manhattan

sobrograb.jpg

The red lines show southbound routes through the South Bronx via the “free” Third Ave. Bridge and the tolled Triborough. The blue line charts the toll-free northbound route from the FDR across the Willis Avenue Bridge.

All the gnashing of teeth over East River bridge tolls has for the most part drowned out discussion of the Ravitch Commission’s proposal to charge motorists for Harlem River crossings as well. Though the tolls would be substantially lower — matching the (currently) $2 transit base fare — it’s still too much for two officials from the Bronx and Upper Manhattan.

From Thursday’s Daily News [1], reporting on Richard Ravitch’s testimony to state Assembly members: Read more..
