Rutgers ready to rumble in the Bronx

Though the Rutgers women’s track team has had two weeks off to prepare for the upcoming Metropolitan Championships in the Bronx, the meet has been burning in the back of Rutgers’ minds for a year now.
For six straight seasons, the Scarlet Knights walked away from the Armory Track and Field Center victorious. Then came last year, where the team was edged out of their seventh consecutive championship win by a mere five points by Seton Hall.
Today, the Knights return to the Big Apple to take another shot at the Pirates as well as their seventh Metropolitan Championship victory in eight years.
“We’re ready to start a new [victory] streak,” said head coach James Robinson. Read more..

Making Money Foot Over Hand

January 29, 2009

A semicircle formed around James Henry Geddie, better known as Chubbs, as he placed his hands on the worn brown tiles of the subway platform and began to spin. The spectators at the 125th Street station in Harlemwatched him scissor-kicking his legs as he tossed his weight effortlessly from hand to hand.

Mr. Geddie, 19, popped up after a minute, pleased with his performance. “I learned from the best,” he said. He was immediately followed by one of the spectators, who wasn’t a random subway rider, but another break dancer. In fact, everyone around Chubbs was a dancer, soaking up his impromptu lesson.

Angel Izepia, who is 14, tried to imitate Chubbs’s moves but had trouble holding himself up on his hands for more than a few turns.

“You got to whip your legs around,” Chubbs said.

No money was collected during the short session on the platform, but for the dancers, nearly all from the same few blocks in the South Bronx, it was a chance to bond and share knowledge.

Catholic parish in the heart of the Bronx

When readers of The Universe pick up their favorite paper every week at Mass, Catholics in an historic New York neighborhood can read the latest news from the UK and Ireland as well.

Each week, The Universe makes its way across the pond to a most unique parish. For some time now, one loyal reader of the paper has been leaving a copy on a table in the back of Our Lady of Mt Carmel parish in the Bronx.

The table is a location where parishioners regularly leave Catholic publications of which they have finished so others may read them.

Since there are many Italians still in the parish, it is not uncommon to see magazines such as Il Rosario, Il Santo dei Miracoli and several other Italian-language religious publications.

As can be expected, there are English-language missionary magazines and the like left as well.

The Church of Our Lady of Mt Carmel is located at 627 East 187 Street, in the middle of what is known as “the Belmont section” of the Bronx or
“Little Italy in the Bronx” (as opposed to Manhattan’s famous Little Italy).

The neighborhood is also referred to as “the Arthur Avenue section”, after the its famous shopping area. The parish is set two streets below Arthur Avenue, which is the main street in the area, and is famous throughout the whole of the New York City metropolitan area. Read more..

Torre won’t be welcomed at Yankee Stadium

In the course of one horrendous season, Joe Torre went from St. Joe to Joe Blow.

Now, over the course of 477 pages, Torre may well have blown more than just a playoff series or two. He may have blown his entire Yankees future.

Publicly, the Yankees are mum about “The Yankee Years,” the soon-to-be-released account of Torre’s managerial tenure co-authored with Tom Verducci. Privately, they are livid.

That means all those little perks that go with being a Legendary Former Yankee have probably gone up in smoke, like all those burning bridges along the Harlem River. The plaque in Monument Park? Back in the box. The retired number? Cross it out. The chance to march out and flash the Papal Wave at Old-Timer’s Day? Wave bye-bye to that idea.

And that old standby, the cushy job with YES? Uh, no.

Over time - a long time - that may change, but right now, David Wells will be named the team nutritionist before Torre is invited back to the Bronx. Read more..
