Not nuts for their neighborhoods: Survey finds Bx. least-satisfied boro

Bronxites are giving Bronx cheers to their own neighborhoods, according to a new survey.

They’re more unhappy with them than residents in all the other boroughs, the survey by the Citizens Committee for New York City found.

Of the 637 Bronx residents surveyed, only 24% reported being “very satisfied” with their neighborhoods, 51% were “somewhat satisfied” and 25% reported being “not at all satisfied,” the highest percentage of any borough.

Peter Kostmayer, president of the Citizens Committee, said the results are similar to those seen in past years in the Bronx, but he is happy to see that, despite current dissatisfaction, residents are hopeful for the future.

“You are going to find a higher level of dissatisfaction in communities that are lower-income, that have serious problems in terms of housing, services, access to shopping, crime, safety and cleanliness,” Kostmayer said.

“But there is some good news here,” he added. “The Bronx scored the highest when we asked people if they were ‘very interested’ in their neighborhood or community affairs.” Read more..

Largely a Puerto Rican and African-American borough for several decades, the Bronx has become a mecca for immigrants from all over the world, according to new Census Bureau numbers.

Some 31% of the borough’s almost 1.4 million residents are foreign-born, making the Bronx one of the top-10 largest and most diverse cities in the U.S., according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2007 American Community Survey, released in December.

“A borough which was, at one time, largely native-born is now a mix of groups that, in the history of the Bronx,  could be unprecedented,” said Joseph Salvo, population director of the city Planning Department.

Commuters wait on a platform as a train arrives at a subway station in New York

The number of riders ranting about fare hikes and service cuts at recent MTA hearings has doubled since 2007, according to figures provided by the authority.

The Nov. 8 midtown Manhattan hearing was likely the longest of its kind in decades, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

More than 700 transit riders attended the gripe session that lasted more than seven hours, ending at 1:26 a.m.

“The stakes are much higher than the stakes were before,” MTA CEO Elliot Sander said Monday.

Unless Albany comes through with a bailout, the MTA has said fares will rise between 25% and 30%.

Some subway and bus routes also will be axed to help plug massive budget gaps, officials have said.

Nearly 350 speakers have voiced opinions at the four hearings held in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island since November. The Bronx hearing is Wednesday night. Read more..
