Final MTA Public Hearing To Be Held In The Bronx

Residents of the Bronx will get their chance to sound off on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s proposed fare hikes and service cuts in the agency’s fifth and final public hearing.

The hearing will take place at 6 p.m. this evening at Lehman College in Bedford Park.

The MTA says it would have to raise bus and subway fares as high as $3 a ride if it doesn’t get help from Albany to help close a $1.2 billion budget deficit.

Some bus and train lines would also be eliminated, while others would see drastic reductions in weekend and overnight service.

Some of the proposed cuts affecting the Bronx include the elimination of the BX4, 14, 20, 34 and BxM7B bus lines.

Other bus lines may see a reduction in weekend and overnight hours. Read more..

Doubt stars play down Oscar hopes

Meryl Streep in Doubt

Streep plays a strict nun who suspects a priest of abusing a child

With a cast headed by Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman and another Oscar winner in the director’s chair, it is hardly surprising film drama Doubt has been showered with accolades.

Even more so when you consider the 2004 stage play on which it is based won four Tonys and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

Small wonder, then, that when Streep, her co-star Amy Adams and director John Patrick Shanley were in London last month, the words “Academy” and “Award” were never far from journalists’ lips.

Their arrival in the capital coincided with the news that their picture had received three Bafta nominations to add to the five Golden Globe nods it received in December.

Since then Doubt has been shortlisted for five Oscars, with both Streep and Adams among those in contention.

Streep was also named best actress at the Screen Actors Guild awards on 25 January.

Governor Focuses on Plan to Limit Subway Fare and Toll Increases

Gov. David A. Paterson will step up his efforts this month to orchestrate a rescue of the financially struggling Metropolitan Transportation Authority, a top aide said on Wednesday.

“This is now going to be the governor’s main focus with the Legislature in the next couple of weeks,” said Marc V. Shaw, a senior adviser to the governor.

The governor has endorsed a rescue plan for the authority that was proposed by a state commission that he created, headed by Richard Ravitch, a former authority chairman.

The plan calls for a new payroll tax to be paid by all employers in the 12-county region served by the authority. It also calls for imposing tolls on the Harlem River and East River bridges connecting Manhattan to Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx.

The authority has said that if the plan is not approved, it will have to raise fare and toll revenue by 23 percent, starting in June, and make deep cuts in service. Both measures are meant to help close a budget deficit this year of $1.2 billion and even larger ones projected in coming years. Read more..
