SUNSET PARK — The newly appointed deputy inspector of the 72nd Police Precinct in Sunset Park, Jesus Raul Pintos, wanted to quietly celebrate his latest promotion with a few friends and family, but his father had other ideas. Last November he organized a surprise party for his son and invited more than 70 people.
Pintos’ recent promotion is the culmination of his lifetime ambition to join the New York Police Department. At 38, he has achieved a rank that is usually given to police officers in their mid 40s. What makes this achievement even more remarkable is that Pintos never formally graduated from high school.
“I never expected to get this far when I was a young kid,” said Pintos who speaks with an inflection of a Spanish accent, his first language. “I wasn’t a good student. I dropped out of high school, so I couldn’t see myself becoming something big.” Read more..

Joe Torre takes book tour to TV on ‘Live With Regis and Kelly’ Wednesday
It was worse than Mariano Rivera blowing a save, or watching Kyle Farnsworth get the ball with a four-run lead.
Disgruntled Yankee fans gave Borders bookstore a Bronx cheer after waiting in line for more than three hours Wednesday afternoon, only to be turned away without getting a chance to meet Joe Torre and have him sign copies of “The Yankee Years,” the book he co-authored with Sports Illustrated’s Tom Verducci.
On the second and final day of his Big Apple tour, Torre was scheduled to sign books for an hour at Borders, located at the corner of Broadway and Wall St.
But there was confusion among a couple hundred customers who believed they were guaranteed to meet Torre - regardless of how long it took - because they had lined up before Borders employees started turning people away.
“I’m ready to kill someone. I’m livid,” a woman was overheard talking into her cell phone as she stormed out. “It’s a disgrace. People waiting all this time, it’s a sin.”
