From Tobacco Leaves to Wedding Bouquets, 169 Years in the Bronx

Luesther T. Mertz Library/New York Botanical Garden

The Lorillard snuff mill, on the grounds of the New York Botanical Garden

In the attic of the Lorillard snuff mill in the Bronx, the gears and pulley for a hand-powered elevator still work

If it weren’t for the low midwinter sunlight raking its ancient field stone walls, the 169-year-old snuff mill — now sitting quietly on a wide bend of the rapid river — just might disappear from view in the dun-colored camouflage of the sycamore and oak trees that surround it.

This is not everyone’s image of the Bronx

Bronx Subway Station Fire

Fire broke out in a utility closet at the Jackson Avenue subway station on the No. 2 line on Sunday, Feb. 8, 2009

There was no service on the No. 2 trains between 149th Street and East 180th Street Sunday night, following a fire at a subway station.

The fire started in a utility closet at the Jackson Street station in The Bronx on Sunday afternoon.

Transit officials said they didn’t know when the smoke condition would be cleaned up — and this will affect the morning commute.

Shuttle bus service was being provided between the 135th Street and East 180th Street stations, making all No. 2 train stops.

Applications Surge at Cooper Union

Mike Essl, against the wall, teaching a design class at the School of Art at Cooper Union. The college expects 3,300 applications for 265 spots in the Class of 2013

Afreen Juli, a senior at the Bronx High School of Science, applied early to Cooper Union, a college in Manhattan that specializes in engineering, art and architecture. So did 10 of her classmates, the most ever from Bronx Science, one of the city’s most selective public schools.

Ms. Juli, who lives in Coney Island, said that she wanted to study film and art; she also applied to the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. But, as she explained in an interview: “N.Y.U. is pretty expensive and I might not be able to afford it. Basically, Cooper Union is free.”

http://www.nypost.com/seven/02082009/photos/spo0z.jpg

Move over, Jason Giambi, Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte, there’s a new potential inductee to the Yankees’ Hall of Shame.

This member simply could have “A-Roid” inscribed on his plaque.

‘ROID-RIGUEZ IN HALL OF SHAME

SHERMAN: BRASS BLEW SHOT TO BAIL FROM THIS BOMBER DISASTER

JET-DEBTOR ALEX PUTS PLANE ON MARKET FOR $20M

According to a Sports Illustrated report released yesterday, Alex Rodriguez tested positive for steroids in his 2003 MVP season with the Rangers, as part of tests that were conducted to determine if random drug testing was necessary for the following season.

So a Yankees offseason that was clear of sideshows as recently as 15 days ago has now become the Blizzard of 2009, with the release of Joe Torre’s controversial new book and the latest report targeting Rodriguez.

“It’s always a circus,” a Yankees official said. “If it’s not this, it’s something else. I’m not shocked about anything anymore.”

Bronx River Parkway Lane Closures

Westchester Traffic News
White Plains, NY - Motorists who use the Bronx River Parkway near Kensico Dam are advised that a lane closure will be in effect for a section of the parkway due to construction for six weeks beginning Feb. 17.

The project is likely to cause traffic delays southbound , particularly during morning rush-hours on weekdays.

The county is reconstructing the northern 1.4-mile of the parkway from Cemetery/Old Tarrytown Road to the Kensico Dam. As a result, one lane of the southbound parkway will be closed between Kensico Circle and Virginia Road.

For additional information, contact the Westchester County Department of Public Works, Traffic Division at 995-2555.

To reduce delays and encourage motorists to seek alternate routes, a number of measures have been taken:

Variable message signs have already been installed to give motorist advance warning.

The county is working closely with the state Department of Transportation and other agencies to get the word out on signs and on the state’s 511 transportation system.
