This was supposed to be a great week for Washington and Wall Street. The administration had leaked in advance that it was going to put a full-court press on for its stimulus and bailout programs. That led to intense anticipatory buying by the stock market bulls.

Monday night’s primetime news conference with President Barack Obama only heightened anticipation ahead of the main events on Tuesday: A big speech from Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and testimony before Congress by Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke.

But shortly after Geithner opened his mouth, stocks began to fall. Then they fell further. By the end of the day, the Dow Jones Industrials had plunged 382 points, or almost 5%.

Guard Dashaun Wiggins scored 34 points to lead Wings Academy past South Bronx, 103-84, in the Bronx borough semifinals

Dashaun Wiggins was still licking his wounds days after one of the worst losses of his young career, when his spirits were suddenly lifted.

He was heading back to his apartment in the Hunts Point section of the Bronx when he ran into Julio Gonzalez, a local boxing trainer Wiggins spars with during the summer to stay in shape. Gonzalez heard of the lopsided defeat, a 23-point blowout to John F. Kennedy on Jan. 22, and offered his advice.

“Sometimes a good boxer needs to get knocked out,” Gonzalez said. Read more..

Dave Valentin

Emmy-winning Latin jazz flutist Dave Valentin will appear at the Bronx Arts Ensemble’s annual jazz concert, Sat., Feb. 28 at 8 pm at the Russian Mission to the UN Residency, Mosholu Avenue at W. 255 Street, in an exciting evening of pop, R&B, Brazilian music and Latin jazz. Appearing with Valentin will be members of his quintet - Bill O’Connell, piano, Lincoln Goines, bass, Robby Ameen, drums and Richie Flores, congas.

Performing a variety of ethnic and classical flutes, Dave Valentin’s playing combines a popular and accessible form of Brazilian, salsa, merengue, funk and jazz. A native of the south Bronx, Valentin began with bongos and congas, later focusing on the flute at the urging of his teacher, Hubert Laws. He has recorded 25 albums and has performed with such legendary performers as Tito Puente (as his music director), Machito, Herbie Mann, Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Barreto, Eddie Palmieri and Johnny Pacheco. Voted “Best Jazz Flutist” in Jazzis Magazine for the past eight years, his most recent CDs, for Highnote Records, are World on a String (2005) and Come Fly With Me (2006).
