Prisoner from Bronx guilty of killing another inmate

KINGSTON - The state prisoner accused of stabbing one of New York’s most notorious inmates to death last year pleaded guilty Wednesday in Ulster County Court.
Luis Rosado, a Bronx native who was already doing 25 years to life for a 1983 murder, pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter, a felony, in connection with the Feb. 20, 2008, stabbing of Larry Davis at the Shawangunk Correctional Facility. Rosado, 43, stabbed Davis to death with a homemade metal shank during a fight in a prison recreation yard.
Davis, 41, gained notoriety in 1986 when a Bronx jury cleared him of charges that he shot six cops. His lawyers argued that Davis was defending himself. He was convicted of weapon-possession charges. He was later convicted of murder. Read more..

‘A Bronx Tale’: One Man and His Borough

Chazz Palminteri, in 2007, lets his hands do the talking.

Chazz Palminteri, in 2007, lets his hands do the talking.

Chazz Palminteri’s hands do so much nimble work in “A Bronx Tale,” they deserve their own dressing room. In the actor’s engrossing, fleet-paced and disarmingly wry solo show, his skedaddling digits and palms help conjure up a 1960s New York neighborhood that’s as robust and piquant as a Zagat-endorsed marinara sauce.

Palminteri’s relaxed but expressive hands chronicle the agitated dice-shaking in a high-stakes craps game. They mime the gobs of mucus hurtling down on a stoop from a chronic spitter on an upper story. They illustrate the monotonous trundling of a crosstown bus, and jingle the car keys of an awkward teenager on a date. Most important, they mimic the majestic three-fingered salute of Sonny, a Mob boss with a heart made of — well, maybe a gold alloy. Read more..

Teacher Michael Loeb at work at his Bronx school

To reach Michael Loeb’s grade 6 special needs class, visitors must first check in with the armed security guard who sits at the head of the school’s cavernous and windowless ground-floor lobby.
The school’s hallways, also starved of natural light, are a sickly olive green. But Mr Loeb’s fourth-floor classroom explodes with colour - the blue and yellow of his alma mater, George Washington University, forms the backdrop to displays of student work and exhortations to achieve. “Every student will grow a year and a half in reading,” declares one mission statement.

A-Rod Receives Bronx Cheer At Spring Training

As spring training got underway in Florida Wednesday, Yankees star Alex Rodriguez received a less than sunny reception.

Boos were mixed in with cheers as Rodriguez stepped up to the plate for the first time since admitting he took performance enhancing drugs back when he was with the Texas Rangers.

Fans were heard chanting “Madonna” and “Where’s your cousin?”

Most of the heckling went away after he hit a two run shot in a 6-to-1 win over the Toronto Blue Jays. The All-Star third baseman even seemed to take the whole thing in stride.

“It’s been a decade like that so. Today was very mild and I thought the fans were great,” said Rodriguez. “Again, when you’re playing, it’s hard to focus on a standing ovation or boos. You just try to go out there and do your job. Again, I didn’t see anything that was bad at all.” Read more..
