Salsa Legend Honored At Bronx Breakfast

Family and friends gathered Wednesday for a tribute breakfast to honor late Latin music pioneer Ralph Mercado — the man who is credited with bringing salsa, mambo, and other latin sounds to the mainstream.

Bronx Senator Pedro Espada Junior presented Mercado’s widow with a New York State Senate Proclamation.

Cynthia Mercado says her husband will be remembered for the love he put into his music.

“He loved music and took it to the highest and the music loved him and the world loved him because who he was and who he represented and what he represented and what he did,” said Mercado.

“People who pioneered so many efforts like Mr. Mercado in the area of Latino music, Salsa, must be celebrated. As we celebrate him, we celebrate our culture, our past, present and future,” said Espada Junior.

Mercado died March 10th at age 67 after a two-year battle with cancer. Read more..
