NYC teacher barricades self inside Bronx classroom

A New York City middle school teacher barricaded himself in a classroom for three hours before surrendering to police.

Francisco Garabitos had been told not to return to the New Millennium Business Academy Middle School because he was under investigation for reportedly hitting a student on Thursday.

The school’s principal called police around 8:30 a.m. Friday to say he was there. Officers responded, and the standoff ended when the teacher surrendered at about 11:30 a.m. The police department bomb squad was on the scene, but no explosives were found.

The building houses three schools. Hundreds of students in the Bronx building were sent to other schools for the rest of the day.

Surrender gun in Bronx, get $200 from city

Taxi drivers, grocery store owners and a group of mothers are all backing Saturday’s first gun buy-back program in the Bronx.

“It’s to our personal concern that programs like this do work,” said Fernando Mateo, head of the New York State Federation of Taxis and the Bodegero Association. “These are the industries most affected by gun violence in New York City.”

As he directed dozens of taxi drivers and bodega owners to hang up posters for the No Questions Asked event co-sponsored by the Bronx district attorney’s office and the NYPD, he thought of Crown Heights bodega owner Mohammed Monsoor Abuzaid and his son Abdul, 18, who were shot and killed during a robbery. Cash-strapped Bronx Zoo evicting animals

Get a closeup view of Alexis, a Siberian Tiger, at Tiger Mountain. Fall is a nice time of the year to make a visit to the Bronx Zoo. Mornings are best to see the animals when they are more active, as many sleep during the afternoon.

The recession is evicting hundreds of animals from the Bronx Zoo.

Cash-strapped zoo officials told a New York City Council committee Thursday that they need to send away deer, bats, foxes, antelopes and other creatures to zoos around the country.

Officials say they’re also closing four exhibits to close a $15 million budget shortfall.

The 114-year-old institution is the country’s largest city zoo. More than 2 million people visited last year.

The exhibits that are closing include World of Darkness, which includes bats, porcupines and primates including night monkeys.
