New York Botanical Garden embraces fresh food movement in The Bronx

Patrons eat chef Dan Rothman’s Rainbow Chard slaw with yarrow berry vinaigrette at the New York Botanical Garden

“It was good. Very fresh,” he said, after swallowing a freshly picked pea.

“We just love nature. They love to plant,” Ephraim’s mother, Chani Steiner said of her children.

This garden scene seemed more a snapshot of country life than one of life in the Bronx, where it took place.

The New York Botanical Garden is embracing the popular fresh food movement this summer with its new Edible Garden program.

Edible Garden, which will run from Saturday through Sept. 13, will expand the garden’s edible plant collection. Read more..

Bronx pols leaving a foul smell in borough

Let’s see. Arrogance. Greed. Sleaze.

Are we leaving anything out here?

It all happened last week:
# State Sen. Pedro Espada toppling Democratic control in the Senate by crossing over to shake down the Republican camp.

That, after Dems stopped the Wascally Wabbit from trying to sneak $2 million in pork barrel funding to two questionable groups linked to his health clinic chain - not the first time he has tried it.

Some folks are also wondering if those files Pedro temporarily claimed were stolen in a burglary at his Mamaroneck “home” might not have been on someone’s subpoena list.
# State Assemblywoman Carmen Arroyo and City Councilwoman daughter Maria (Will Change Last Name for Votes) del Carmen Arroyo glomming free flights to the Caribbean.

Those trips courtesy of Carmen’s grandson/Maria’s nephew Richard (Little Ricky) Izquierdo Arroyo.

The feds charged him and Margarita Villegas with stealing $200,000 in goods and services from a South Bronx nonprofit linked to one the Arroyos funded and larded with relatives. Read more..

Bronx day care centers losing classrooms in fall

The city’s Administration for Children’s Services said last week that four Bronx day cares will lose classroom openings and all 5-year-olds in ACS day care must move to regular school kindergartens starting in September.

Day care directors and municipal union representatives say they fear the changes will mean layoffs and possible closings.

Cheryl Dewitt, 45, executive director at Williamsbridge NAACP Early Childhood Education, said unionized salaries depend on the number of day care classrooms, and that the cuts could also affect part-time aides and cooking staff.

The shift to kindergartens is in response to a $62 million ACS deficit, which will affect thousands of children in the Bronx alone, many from underprivileged, working class families.

Under the new plan, ACS day care slots will be available only to those who can’t be enrolled in kindergartens. The number of classrooms will be cut based on enrollment.

Despite Bronx beating against Yankees, Mets’ hopes start and end with Johan Santana

In recent weeks Mets fans told themselves it was nothing to worry about, like that first hint of a sore throat you tell yourself won’t turn into something worse. Yeah, sure, Johan Santana had been a bit off his game, but still, he’s Johan Santana.

Only now you can’t pretend anymore. Now the sore throat has turned into a fever and body aches, and you’re just hoping you don’t have the swine flu.

The Mets, after all, have hung tough in the face of all the injuries, all the bad base running, all the killer losses, but if there’s one thing they can’t survive it’s Santana at less than his best for more than the occasional start here and there.

It would be a lot easier to shrug off the beating Santana took in Sunday’s 15-0 loss to the Yankees if it came completely out of nowhere. But in truth, it’s been awhile since the Mets’ ace approached the form that made him so untouchable the first month or so of the season.

In his last six starts his ERA is 6.50. And this one, in which he allowed a career-high nine runs, comes on the heels of giving up a career-high four home runs against the Phillies in Citi Field last week. Read more..
