Teachers at Bronx’s Eagle Academy rage over being told to inflate grades

The Bronx School of Law, Justice and Government which houses the Eagle Academy, where educators are accusing the principal of forcing them to inflating grades

The Education Department referred the allegations to the Special Commissioner of Investigation Wednesday.

“I have never seen anything like this,” said Hal Lance, an Eagle Academy English teacher who has taught in city schools for more than 25 years. “I have never seen a principal ask entire departments to change grades.”

Teachers say they were instructed to change failing grades to passing for some special-education students who, in some cases, did not even attend class.

“In some cases, the students haven’t submitted any work at all, and they were failing the exams,” said a teacher who asked to remain anonymous out of fear of retaliation. “Some teachers did make the changes.”

Another teacher was told to change a grade of zero for quizzes and classes that students had either skipped or refused to take, she said.

Principal Osei Owusu-Afriye, who is in his first year on the job, accused the teachers of being “disgruntled.”

Bronx girl wins PAL essay contest becomes police commish for a day

Samantha Marie Medina of the Bronx wins Police Commissioner for a Day after winning the annual PAL essay contest

Samantha Marie Medina, 16, took the reins of the NYPD and became police commissioner - for a day - Wednesday after winning a Police Athletic League essay contest.

The 11th-grader from St. Catharine Academy and 130 other contest-winning students from across the city were sworn in at Police Headquarters - and promptly took their mock posts in high-level NYPD positions.

“I’m was shocked when I got it,” said Medina, who last year won the right to run the 49th Precinct in Morris Park for a day. “This was, like, a big promotion for me, so I was really happy.”

The students won by submitting essays detailing programs that they, as police commissioner, would use to improve the city.

NYC Transit sending Express 4 train speeding up thru Bronx

Most No. 4 train riders still won’t get a seat, but come Monday some won’t have to stand as long.

NYC Transit is launching the Bronx Express 4 - southbound train service skipping some nine stations between Woodlawn and 149th St./Grand Concourse, officials said yesterday.

That maneuver, taking advantage of new signals and a third middle track along the crowded line, will cut trips in that stretch by about 3.5 minutes, officials said.

The jaunts now take about 20 or 21 minutes, officials said.

“This is a significant time saving when you are headed out to work in the morning,” IRT East Group General Manager David Knight said.

The weekday pilot program will run through June 26. An express train will depart Woodlawn every 15 minutes between 7:15 a.m. and 8 a.m. weekdays.

After Woodlawn, the express will stop at Moshulu Parkway, Burnside Ave., and 149th St. It will then make regular No. 4 train stops.

Conductors will alert riders at Moshulu Parkway and Burnside Ave. that the trains are running express, NYC Transit President Howard Roberts said. Read more..
