Bronx mom Elizabeth Nunez, back-to-school sweepstakes prize

It was good News for Elizabeth Nunez & son Julian

The extra cash comes at a perfect time for Nunez, 32, whose 9-year-old son, Julian Alberto, is headed into fourth grade at PS 157, the Grove Hill School, in the Woodstock section of the Bronx.

Thankfully, there isn’t much debate about what to buy: a brand-new blue- and-white school uniform with matching shoes, required for Julian’s school, sold at Cookies for around $38.

School supplies are also on the must list and, if Julian has his way, the newest book in Jeff Kinney’s “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” series.

The prize money is a welcome relief for Nunez, an assistant teacher for Head Start, in the Bronx.

“Everything is getting a little bit more expensive, and it’s getting difficult to buy what we need,” said Nunez, who will hit the store this weekend.

Parents this fall are set to spend more than 17 billion dollars on their kids’ back-to-school shopping. Read more..

Bronx girl Destiny Antonio survives seven-story plunge

Family photo of Destiny Antonio, 8, who fell from her 7th floor apartment window and survived

Scene at 2140 Seward Avenue, Destiny Antonio, fell.                 It was her destiny to survive

An 8-year-old Bronx girl with an apt name survived a seven-floor plunge from her bedroom window early Thursday.

Destiny Antonio landed on a 10-foot swath of grass in front of the Castle Hill Houses, narrowly missing a paved roadway when she fell around 1:30 a.m.

“Her name is Destiny - maybe she was destined to live,” said Paul Miller, 40, a family friend for two decades.

Friends said the family was sleeping when Destiny somehow tumbled out the window in the bedroom she shares with some of her 11 siblings.

The little girl underwent hours of surgery Thursday at Jacobi Medical Center, said Miller. She suffered a broken hip, shattered pelvis, broken leg and trauma to her intestines and liver.

A hospital spokeswoman said she was in critical condition Thursday.

The little girl’s mother, Robin Antonio, suffered a panic attack after the fall and had to be given sedatives at the hospital, Miller said.

Authorities are still trying to determine how Destiny managed to fall out the window, which has a visible window guard.

Neighbors said the window also opens from the top, possibly giving the youngster enough room to squeeze herself through.

An NYCHA spokesman said the agency and the NYPD are investigating. He confirmed that every window in the apartment had a guard and said there had been no complaints about the window. Read more..
