Green Affordable MF Opens in Bronx

NEW YORK CITY-Bronx Pro Real Estate Management opened a new 90-unit affordable housing development at 1085 Washington Ave., in the Morrisania section of the Bronx on Tuesday, according to a release from the management company. Bronx Pro says it has completed new construction and renovation projects through the Neighborhood Entrepreneur and New Foundations programs, sponsored by the city’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development. In the release, Peter Magistro, president of Bronx Pro, says, “this building is a testament not only to Bronx Pro’s commitment to developing quality affordable housing, but our commitment to the creation of new communities in the Bronx.” Read more..

New Arts And Education Center Opens In The Bronx

The Casita Maria Center for Arts and Education gave NY1 a tour this morning of its brand-new home in the Bronx, which opens to the public today.

The center rebuilt its headquarters in Longwood through a public-private partnership with the Department of Education.

The six-story building houses both the center and a public school, and features state-of-the-art science labs, dance studios, and art classrooms.

“Casita Maria’s goal is to help students achieve academically and close the achievement gap and it’s also to help students explore and be creative artists,” said Casita Maria Executive Director Sarah Calderon. Read more..

The Bronx now has its own soda

Three native Bronxites are bringing their own flavor back to the Bronx, igniting peoples’ taste buds with the old school flavor of fountain soda.

Sitting on the stoop of 2315 Cambreleng Avenue, Nick d’Aragona and Ralph Rubino were reminiscing about their youth and the memories of their favorite fountain soda.The result of their trip down memory lane became the product sold today throughout the borough, known as Bronx Pop.

“I’m a big fan of soda and grew up in the neighborhood,” said d’Aragona.“We were sitting around with my uncle and we wanted to come up with a concept no one else had thought of and we started thinking of the fountain soda they used to make at local candy stores.” Read more..

Terror scare in Bronx

A Bronx block was abruptly shut down last night after bomb-sniffing dogs set off a terror search at a warehouse.

A tip led investigators looking into a possible terror cell in the city to American Self Storage on River Avenue in High Bridge. Police dogs indicated they’d found something suspicious.

FBI evidence teams hauled out three boxes at around 10:15 p.m. The contents were not immediately known.

Meanwhile, a member of the NYPD’s intelligence division could be called to testify on why he trusted a Queens imam with the details of the probe into a suspected Al Qaeda cell. Read more..

Sotomayor Throwing Out First Pitch

She needs to bring her elbow back and drop her arm slot if she wants to have any chance of getting one over the plate. Newly minted Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor will enjoy the highest honor of her young career on Saturday — she’ll be throwing out the first pitch at  the Yankees-Red Sox game.

“Having Justice Sotomayor, a South Bronx native, participate in our yearly Hispanic Heritage Month celebration is very exciting, as she is an inspiration to so many,” Manuel García, the Yankees’ director of Latino Affairs, said in a statement. “We are proud to welcome her and President Martinelli to our new home.” Read more..
