Yankees Win 27th World Title With 7-3 Victory In The Bronx

In their first season under the lights of their new Bronx stadium, the Yankees won their 27th world title Wednesday night with a 7-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 6 of the World Series.

The win is the team’s first championship since 2000 and represents the fifth World Series ring for the “core four” of Mariano Rivera, Derek Jeter, Andy Pettitte and Jorge Posada.

“You never know when you’re going to get back here, you know, so for all my teammates that have been here before and we couldn’t do it,” Posada said. “This really says a lot about our team. I’m excited. I mean I’m speechless. I’m really enjoying the moment right now.”

Rivera closed out Game 6, getting the Phillies’ Shane Victorino on a groundball to second to end it.

“Now it’s over. Now there’s a lot of celebration, a lot of smiles and that’s it,” said Rivera. “We win today and I’m going to rest now.”

The star of the game was Hideki Matsui. The Yankees DH was awarded the Series MVP award following his two-run homer, two-run single, and two-run double performance Wednesday night.

His six RBIs tied a record set in 1960 by the Yankees’ Bobby Richardson for most in a single World Series game.

Yankees pitcher Andy Pettitte picked up the win, adding to his record of postseason wins and series-clinching wins.

The World Series celebration could be heard all across the city, but especially in the Bronx.

Fans who came pouring out of the stadium following the Bombers’ victory said they were glad they clinched the title at home.

“Amazing, amazing! Greatest game I ever went to. About time. A-Rod, Jeter, Pettitte, Matsui MVP, what more can be said,” shouted one Yankees fan.

“New president, new stadium, new champions, New York!” said another enthusiastic fan.

In Times Square, fans wasted no time stocking up on World Series souvenirs at Modell’s Sporting Goods. Read more..

Centenarians from Hebrew Home for the Aged, 1199, and CCLC Tell Governor Paterson “Enough is Enough!”

Who: Senator Jeff Klein, five centenarian residents of the Hebrew Home for the Aged at Riverdale; Dan Reingold, CEO, and staff and faculty of the Hebrew Home for the Aged at Riverdale, representatives of local 1199, representatives of the Continuing Care Leadership Coalition.

What: Five centenarian residents of the Hebrew Home for the Aged at Riverdale will speak about how they – and countless other aged residents in nursing homes across New York State – will be affected by Governor Paterson’s proposal to cut Medicaid by 10%.   They will be joined by Senator Jeff Klein, representatives of 1199/SEIU, staff of the Hebrew Home for the Aged at Riverdale, and representatives of the Continuing Care Leadership Coalition (CCLC), an association of more than 100 not-for-profit and publicly-sponsored long term care organizations in New York, who stand with them in calling for the elimination of the devastating proposed cuts.

“While I understand our state is in dire need of a budget deficit reduction plan, I do not believe the health care industry should shoulder the burden of cutting the budget. The health care industry is constantly evolving and growing, employing millions of workers every year. We cannot scrap funding from one of the biggest employment producers in the state,” said Senator Klein.

Under the Governor’s proposed budget cutting plan, nursing homes in New York would lose close to $250 million in the four and a half months between November 15, 2009 and March 31, 2010.  The Hebrew Home for the Aged would lose an estimated $1,680,000 during the same period.  “Over the years Medicaid funding has been cut dramatically.  However the forthcoming budget proposes cuts to Medicaid that are so severe it will be impossible to maintain the quality of life necessary for our residents.  These cuts will hurt the most vulnerable of our citizens and its disastrous effect will force us and other nursing homes to further reduce services and staff,” said Daniel Reingold, president and CEO of the Hebrew Home at Riverdale.

Where: Hebrew Home for the Aged at 5901 Palisade Avenue, Riverdale 10471

When: 1:00 pm on Friday, November 6

Yanks are the best team money can buy, but Cashman deserves praise

teixeira-celebration.jpg

The 2009 Yankees had an overall payroll of $206.8 million, nearly 50 percent higher than that of their closest competitor

The area in between the Yankees’ dugout and their clubhouse usually functions as an indoor batting cage, but on this night it served an arguably more important purpose. It was a holding pen for the players’ wives and girlfriends — their WAGs, in the current parlance. As their husbands and boyfriends conducted the first few minutes of their post-championship bacchanal, team security sensibly kept the WAGs out of the clubhouse — “Someone could get hurt in there!” — and they hugged each other and took pictures of each other and took sips from plastic cups, as they waited for things to calm down just a little. They included in their number Joanna Garcia, a guest star on Gossip Girl and the girlfriend of Nick Swisher, and Minka Kelly, a cheerleader on Friday Night Lights and the girlfriend of Derek Jeter. Kate Hudson, Alex Rodriguez’s steady, was not subjected to the confines of the holding pen — she starred in Bride Wars, after all — but she was around.
