Like the other firefighters who’ve made it to the final round of the Daily News’ first
FDNY Five Alarm Cook Off, sponsored by the Municipal Credit Union and Best Buy, Jimmy Lowe has been taking a ribbing from his crew, Bronx Rescue 3 in the Tremont neighborhood.
It all stems from Lowe’s impressive knife skills: Not only can he deftly butterfly the flank steak for his winning mushroom-and-bacon-stuffed pinwheels in seconds, the 18-year FDNY veteran can carve cucumbers and tomatoes into rosettes to garnish his already exceptional plates. That’s a trick that’ll surely wow celeb chef Rachael Ray, who will host the finals on her morning show this Friday.
Jimmy Lowe prepares his specialty steak dinner for his fellow firefighters in the Bronx.
Except that in the Bronx borough semi-finals, Lowe made the mistake of cracking wise about those fragile flowers, saying they hailed from his feminine side. As a result, the brothers of “Big Blue” aren’t letting him live it down.
“The whole department was calling up,” says company Captain Jim Ellson, “asking, ‘is his locker painted pink yet?’ ”

Much has been made about this year’s World Series champions, the New York Yankees, and their astronomical payroll. Many critics point to the estimated $208 million the Yankees spent in player salaries in 2009, and claim the “Bronx Bombers” simply “bought” the World Series championship. While it’s true that the Yankees far outspent any of their opponents this past season, it’s hard to argue with the results: they are baseball’s best in 2009.
With this in mind, we’ve decided to take a look at World Series champions over the past 10 years and analyze whether big bucks can buy World Series success.
The Yankees have spent big dollars throughout the decade, and it’s paid off with playoff appearances in nine of the past 10 seasons, and four World Series appearances, but you’ll never believe how much they actually spent to get there. With the likes of A-Rod, Jeter and CC, the Yankees were able to bring the World Series championship back to the Bronx for the first time since 2000. The Red Sox have matched the Yanks as far as titles, and have kept up with New York in spending as best they could. It took a group of “idiots” and the greatest series comeback in postseason history to reverse the Curse of the Bambino in 2004. Read more..

A man who Connecticut police say offered strangers paid sex with his wife in an Internet ad has been fined $2,000.
Forty-nine-year-old Florian Penev of the Bronx, N.Y., pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor prostitution conspiracy charge Tuesday in Norwalk Superior Court and paid the fine.
Norwalk police say they arrested Penev and his wife, 36-year-old Zdravka Zotkova, in June after officers responded to their Craigslist ad, which offered sex with Zotkova at a city hotel.
Police say Penev told officers during his arrest that he had recently lost his job as a graphic designer.
Zotkova was allowed into a court program that will result in prostitution charges against her being dismissed if she completes it.
Penev declined to comment when reached at his home Wednesday. Read more..

Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s successful campaign for a third term was widely anticipated, but the results were not without surprises.
Bronx voters supported city Comptroller Bill Thompson, the Democratic nominee, over Mr. Bloomberg, an independent, 60.8 percent to 37.1 percent, the largest borough-wide margin for the challenger. Brooklyn was the only other borough to give Mr. Thompson a victory, and by a much smaller margin of 50.9 percent to 45.3 percent.
Riverdale, though, went for Mr. Bloomberg. Districts 80 and 81, comprising Pelham Parkway, Norwood, Woodlawn and Riverdale, were the only districts in the Bronx to favor Mr. Bloomberg. In district 80, Mr. Bloomberg received 7,041 votes to Mr. Thompson’s 6,377, and in district 81, it was an even bigger gap of 9,698 votes to 6,732, according to polling data. Read more..
