Facility Completes Cluster of Hydrogen Filling Stations in Metro NYC Area
The Department of Sanitation New York City (DSNY) announces the opening of a hydrogen fueling facility located on DSNY property in the Bronx. The facility, developed in conjunction with Shell Hydrogen, and serving General Motors fuel cell vehicles, completes a “cluster” of hydrogen facilities in the New York metro area. Shell opened a hydrogen station in White Plains in 2008 and another at the JFK International Airport earlier in 2009.
Creating a fueling infrastructure is a critical step in bringing hydrogen fuel technology to fruition. Public-private partnerships between companies such as Shell and General Motors and public entities such as DSNY help to build that infrastructure.
Hydrogen is a significant part of the nation’s future alternative energy strategy. Hydrogen is not harmful to the environment: it is non-toxic, non-carcinogenic and cannot contaminate groundwater or air. Fuel cell vehicles are at least twice as efficient as gasoline-powered cars. And the tailpipes of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles emit nothing more than water vapor and heat.
