NO BRONX MALL: The plan to turn the Kingsbridge Armory into a shopping mall is dead. The city council voted overwhelmingly against the zoning change the Bronx project needed. The main problem was the so-called “living wage” provision. Bronx council members and some local groups insisted the project’s developer require tenants to pay employees $10 an hour with benefits in return for tax breaks. The $310- million project would have been the largest development project in the Bronx since the recession began.

BUSY MAIL DAY: If your mail carrier looks a little tired today, they have a good reason. The postal service says yesterday was their busiest mailing day of the year. Around 830- million pieces of mail were put through the system. That’s an increase of more than 40 % over the average daily volume of 583- million pieces of mail.

FINANCIAL FOOTBALL: A new video game is being used to help New York students learn to manage their money. Financial Football is designed to make the dullness of balancing a checkbook look more like the thrill of driving for a touchdown. The game tests high school and college students’ money skills in an online simulation based on the rules of football.
