Homeless Bronx Student Wins Big College Scholarship

Some high school students learn about hardship by reading Charles Dickens novels.   Bronx resident Karina Melendez lived one.

When she sits among her friends she looks no different than the rest of them. But Karina has survived more in her 17 years than many have in a lifetime.

At the age of 10 she was diagnosed with bone cancer.

“I had to go through chemotherapy. I lost my hair, I couldn’t walk, I was in a wheelchair,” says Melendez.  “It was basically me fighting for my life.”

She beat the disease and the wheelchair that came with it-but life didn’t get much easier.

When she was a sophomore at the Bronx High School for Law and Finance, her mother and stepfather split up, and Karina and her mother lost the apartment.

“My mother never graduated high school. She never had a job&hellipall we had was $600 a month from my disability check and that wasn’t enough.”

“I was in a shelter with my mom and it got to a point where it wasn’t safe me living with my mother anymore,” said Karina, explaining that “my mother became very abusive” and that “she was using drugs and really stressed out all the time&hellip. I had to be removed from her care.”

Even as she moved frequently from foster home to foster home, Karina stayed at the top of her class.

“She has one of the most amazing drives I’ve seen,” says her teacher Scott Pullman. ”She always talks about how she needs to improve herself.”

A combination of that drive, hard work, and resilience finally paid off; for the first time in her life Karina doesn’t have to worry.

Karina has received the Annenberg Scholarship, a national award given to only five students across the country which will fully cover her attendance at the university of her choice.

Karina says the scholarship is more than an opportunity; it’s also an answer to her biggest question in life.

“The reason why [I] haven’t given up — this is it,” she said. Read more..

Bronx assemblywoman Carmen Arroyo

A Bronx assemblywoman is defending an aide who was arrested on charges of impersonating a police officer and stealing $4,000.

Carmen Arroyo said she would not abandon Wilfredo Nazario, describing him as an excellent worker who is dedicated to the community.

“It was a big mistake,” Arroyo said. “He was not impersonating a police officer. Whoever made the arrest made a mistake.”

Nazario and an accomplice flashed police shields May 18 as they robbed Sisto Jaime Jr. of $4,000 he had hidden in his bedroom, a criminal complaint says.

“We are doing an investigation,” Nazario told witness Anthony Jamie, according to the complaint. “Go back to your room.”

Nazario was charged with burglary, grand larceny, criminal impersonation, possession of stolen property and trespassing. He was held on $7,500 bail yesterday.

Nazario’s lawyer said his client bought the police shield as a souvenir, and his time sheets will exonerate him.

“He was at work that day, and apparently there is a video of this,” said lawyer Seth Curkin.

Bus cuts in the Bronx have forced some riders to make an extra transfer, in effect doubling their fares. Assembleyman Dinowitz wants the MTA to help them out by granting an extra free transfer

The MTA service cuts that went into effect this week are hitting some bus riders where it hurts the most - in the wallet. Now one Bronx politician is hoping to help ease the pain.

Scaled-back services on the Bx20 in Riverdale and the Bx34 in Woodlawn amount to a 100% fare hike for riders who now have to take two buses before transferring to the subway during off-peak hours and on weekends, charged Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz (D-Bronx).

He is proposing that the MTA offer electronic paper transfer cards so riders can transfer to the subway for free during the affected times.

“We just received the letter and we are reviewing it,” MTA spokesman Aaron Donovan said yesterday.

Dinowitz said something has to be done.

NYPD steps up overnight patrols in Brooklyn, Bronx

The New York City Police Department is stepping up its overnight patrols in parts of Brooklyn and the Bronx.

The department is increasing its police presence because of a recent spike in deadly street violence in the two boroughs.

The number of officers on the street from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. in 23 precincts could double or even triple.

Police believe high-visibility patrols could deter violence and catch criminals shortly after they act. Read more..
