Says city seeking developers to turn former Bx. military post into retail mecca
In his yearly address, Mayor Bloomberg says the city is seeking developers to turn the Kingsbridge Armory in the Bronx into a vibrant retail mecca or mixed-used space.
A sweeping transformation of the vacant Kingsbridge Armory took center stage in Mayor Bloomberg’s yearly address.
Hizzoner said that once again the city is seeking developers to turn the former Bronx military post into a vibrant retail mecca or mixed-use space.
A deal to overhaul the landmark building collapsed in 2009 after local politicians and unions demanded workers get more than minimum wage.
Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr., who led the charge to block the prior deal, said he now supports the latest proposal.
He’ll let the battle over the so-called $10-per-hour living wage play out in the City Council — instead of digging in for higher pay over more jobs.
Insiders say Diaz’s aspirations for higher office played a role in his new stance.
But Diaz denied he was influenced by politics, insisting “this has nothing to do with 2013. It has everything to do with creating jobs and developing a beautiful building.”
