A BRONX TALE’s Tommy Mottola to Produce SUPER FLY

According to the New York Post, Tommy Mottola is diving headlong into the Broadway business with plans to produce a musical adaptation of SUPER FLY and a to-be-revealed “celebrity” centered show, in addition to his previously announced production of A BRONX TALE, directed by Robert De Niro.Tommy-Mottola-to-Produce-SUPER-FLY-A-BRONX-TALE-and-to-be-Revealed-Show-on-Broadway-20010101Based on the 1972 film featuring songs by Curtis Mayfield, SUPER FLY is about a cocaine dealer and his last big score before leaving the drug biz. The show will be directed by Bill T. Jones and produced by Michael David (Jersey Boys, Urinetown, Tommy). Casting is still underway, and the production will hold a final workshop in June before hitting the Broadway stage next winter.

Very few details have been released about Mottola’s third project about a “current celebrity”.

De Niro helmed the film version of A BRONX TALE in 1993. Chazz Palminteri, who penned and appeared in the original film as well as the Broadway play, is currently writing the book for the upcoming stage musical. Bon Jovi’s David Bryan, who wrote the Tony-award winning music for MEMPHIS will write the music for the project, while Sergio Trujillo (Jersey Boys, Addams Family) will take on the choreography.

The 1993 crime drama ‘A Bronx Tale’ was set in The Bronx during the turbulent era of the 1960s. It was the directorial debut of De Niro and follows a young Italian-American teenager as his path in life is guided by two father figures, played by De Niro and Chazz Palminteri. It also includes a brief appearance by Joe Pesci. It was written by Palminteri, based partially upon his childhood. The film grossed over $17 million domestically in the box office.

Mottola co-owns Casablanca Records with Universal Music Group. Ex-husband of Mariah Carey and currently married to singer Thalia, Mottola ran Sony Music Entertainment for almost 15 years. Also a former talent manager, Mottola has worked with the likes of John Mellencamp, Diana Ross, Mariah Carey, Gloria Estefan, Shakira and Jennifer Lopez.
