Asian Heritage Month: Bronx’s Bangladeshi Community Proudly Grows
Hasan Ali of the Organization of Bangladeshi Americans has been active in the city’s Bangladeshi community for twenty years.
According to a 2006 population survey, 5,600 Bangladeshis lived in the Bronx — an increase of 1,600 people since the 2000 census.
But Ali and his neighbors say there are far more who have not be counted. Currently, Bangladeshis are the largest nationality of Asian-born Americans in the Bronx.
Ali first found himself in the spotlight when tragedy struck his homeland.
