Two Bronx men held on drug, weapons charges after Nyack traffic stop

Two Bronx men held on drug, weapons charges after Nyack traffic stop

Two Bronx men are being held at the Rockland County jail following their arrest early yesterday on drug and weapon charges after a traffic stop, Orangetown police said.

Police Officer Nicholas Whalen stopped a car driven by Jason Martinez, 23, of Riverdale on Route 59 in Nyack at 2:23 a.m. after noticing the car had a broken taillight. Martinez showed the officer a license, which was suspended.

A passenger in the car, Richard Jones, 17, of the Bronx, had what appeared to be a forged driver’s license, police said.

Whalen searched Martinez and found a gravity knife. A search of the car turned up a bottle of 24 Adderall pills - a prescription amphetamine used primarily to treat attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. There was no name on the prescription bottle and no indication that the medication was prescribed to either man, police said.

Both men were charged with third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a felony. Jones was also charged with criminal possession of a forged instrument, a felony.

Martinez faces misdemeanor charges of criminal possession of a weapon and driving with a suspended license as well as a violation of possession of marijuana.

Both were arraigned in Village Court before Justice Robert Knoebel. Bail was set at $1,500 for each. Both were being held in the county jail and were told to return Tuesday to Village Court.

Fifteen alleged members of a Bronx drug ring that sold heroin and cocaine near schools were busted Wednesday, the Daily News has learned.

Authorities said the ringleaders are still being sought, and more arrests are expected. Thirty-one suspects are named in a 177-count indictment in the case.

Authorities said the ring operated from Dec. 10, 2002, until Wednesday, selling small quantities of heroin and cocaine to undercover officers. The indictment alleges 46 counts of selling drugs in or near a school.
