Stats Amore: South Bronx Gridders Talk About Fitness Sports Season
South Bronx seniors Elizear Torres and Sylvestre Maldonado finished a grueling ten-game football season just a month ago. Torres was a workhorse tailback, running for 776 yards and seven touchdowns and Maldonado played both ways, scoring five offensive touchdowns.
But both players had little time to rest: fitness season was right around the corner. Sure, they were in shape, but they still have to adjust to their new sport. Here, they talk about the transition from football to fitness and how one sport benefits the other:
Torres: “For football, you have to give up your (life) to prepare for the season. It’s at least six hours a day, five days a week. So when fitness comes, I’ll jump right back into it because I’m already in shape.”
Maldonado: “For me, the training is not that much different. You have to put your body to the test for both sports. I wasn’t much of an athlete in junior high, so I needed training in both sports to be successful.”
