Bronx Riviera open for business

With the lingering recession, hundreds of thousands of people will head for the “Bronx Riviera” instead, as Orchard Beach and other city beaches officially open this Memorial Day weekend.

“We think more people will do a ’staycation’ this summer,” said Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe, “so we’re expecting record numbers at beaches this year.”

Joined by about 100 Public School 86 students and local seniors, Benepe helped kick off the 2009 summer beach season yesterday with the ceremonial opening of Orchard Beach.

Starting Saturday, all city beaches will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Labor Day weekend. Read more..

Crime Brings 2008 In With A Bang!

A string of eight violent incidents across the city during the early hours of the new year yesterday, including three shootings involving police officers, make it clear police have a difficult task ahead in 2008 as they try cut the number of homicides from last year’s 494, the low point since reliable records have been kept.

The first recorded shots of 2008 were aimed at police officers. Before an hour had passed, bullets whizzed toward police in three separate shootings in the Bronx and Manhattan, hitting two marked police cars but leaving officers unscathed. Officers fired back one time, hitting a man in the buttocks.
