Montefiore Medical Center Adds North Division

Montefiore Medical Center Adds North Division

Former Our Lady of Mercy Medical Center Assets Acquired

Move Enhances Delivery of High Quality, Compassionate Healthcare to Community As Care and Services Continue

Montefiore Medical Center, one of New York City’s largest healthcare systems, today announced it has completed its acquisition of most of the assets of Our Lady of Mercy Medical Center (OLM). As a result of this acquisition, the former OLM becomes the North Division of Montefiore Medical Center.

The acquisition makes Montefiore a 1,491-bed academic medical center employing more than 16,000 associates serving the two million residents of the Bronx and Westchester County. There are no immediate plans for service changes and patient care will continue uninterrupted.

“We are enhancing the availability of high-quality, innovative healthcare and vital services in the Bronx and providing resources for our patients and the communities we serve,” said Steven M. Safyer, MD, President and CEO, Montefiore Medical Center.

“This preserves a location for healthcare delivery that the surrounding community has relied on for many years,” said Dr. Safyer.

Local residents now will have access to an even greater number of healthcare services in many more Montefiore locations throughout the Bronx and nearby Westchester.

“This is great news for the community,” said Congressman Charles B. Rangel, Chairman, House Ways and Means Committee. “At a time when people are increasingly worried about their healthcare options, local residents can rest assured that they are not just keeping services close to home, but are also getting the additional resources and management team of Montefiore Medical Center, one of our nation’s finest medical institutions.”

Bronx Doctors Prescribe Miracle Pill For Iraqi Boy

Bronx Doctors Prescribe Miracle Pill For Iraqi Boy

An Iraqi boy who traveled to the Bronx to be treated for a rare brain tumor can be cured with a simple pill, his delighted doctors said Tuesday.

Gorgis Majer, 10, has an unusual cancer that can be “melted away” within months by taking the medicine, said Dr. Rick Abbott, director of surgical neuro-oncology at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore Medical Center.

No surgery is necessary.

“It’s absolutely amazing,” Abbott said. “We’re talking about a tumor 4 to 5 inches across and 3 inches high and 2 to 3 inches from front to back. It was a big lump of tissue in there, and to think in six months he’ll have a normal [brain] scan is pretty remarkable.”

Hours before Gorgis was to undergo surgery last month, tests showed that he had elevated levels of the hormone prolactin. The only explanation was a tumor linked to the pituitary gland, which controls growth and other functions.

Elephant Ensemble Theater Brings New Production to Bronx Hospital

Elephant Ensemble To Perform “Thumbelina” to Kids at Montefiore

Elephant Ensemble Theater will bring their 2008 production of “Thumbelina: The Story of a Brave Little Girl” to the Bronx when they perform on March 1st at The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore.

Elephant Ensemble Theater will bring their 2008 production of “Thumbelina: The Story of a Brave Little Girl” to the Bronx when they perform on March 1st at The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore.

This represents Elephant’s mission to bring free theater to children in New York City and outer borough hospitals who do not have significant programming.

Elephant Ensemble presents valuable role models for the children and leave them with a heightened sense of morale.

Their current show is a Thumbelina for modern times, a spunky little girl who, once lost, fights her way back home to safety. The production utilizes many classic children’s theater techniques such as audience participation, best illustrated when Thumbelina drives off an on-coming storm by blowing the clouds away with the help of her audience.

Thumbelina debuted in October 2007 at Mt. Sinai Hospital and performed in a production studio in front of a blue screen, where the play was then broadcasted live into children’s rooms. This time they will perform in a playroom in front of a live audience when they bring the show to Montefiore.
