Chone Figgins looked around the impressive clubhouse digs at the new Yankee Stadium — it was like moving into a much nicer neighborhood — and wasn’t sure he was all that crazy about the change.
“I left a lot of hits — and a few bombs — in that old place,” Figgins said, grinning.
The building next door did, indeed, seem to bring out the best in the Angels’ dynamic leadoff man.
Figgins was a career .342 hitter in The House That Ruth Built. He did, indeed, unload a few blasts there, twice going deep in 111 at-bats.
Figgins was part of two Angels teams that eliminated the Yankees in the postseason, in 2002 — en route to a World Series title — and in 2005. There were some sweet memories attached to the old edifice.
Taking a look at the new layout, and seeing that it is virtually identical in so many respects, had a soothing impact on Figgins.
He christened the new Yankee Stadium in his fashion, lashing a leadoff triple on Thursday night against A.J. Burnett to the vast reaches of left-center, scoring a moment later on Maicer Izturis’ infield out. Read more..
