Spare Times: For Children

‘COLLAGE THE COLORS OF WINTER’

The title of this program might seem like an oxymoron: winter doesn’t appear to have many colors, much less those worthy of collage.

But that isn’t true for Noah Baen, who leads the drop-in family art projects at Wave Hill, the 28-acre Bronx garden. On Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. Mr. Baen will help children discover a surprising variety of hues. In “Collage the Colors of Winter” young visitors will hear a seasonal story in the Kerlin Learning Center and then go outside to gather natural materials (above).

“The witch hazel blooms in winter,” Mr. Baen said. But while it may be too early to observe those yellow and orange blossoms, “we’re likely to see red and purple berries hanging from bushes.” Children can collect sweet-gum seed balls, which are often red-brown, as well as evergreen sprigs.

But Mr. Baen also encourages appreciation of the hazy shades of winter, which are like bit players who take turns onstage when the glamorous stars have exited. “The harmonies are subtler, so there’s more of a place for the neutral shades to sing out, and textures as well,” he said. Read more..

Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz didn’t turn to celebrity magazines for money this holiday season — instead, they premiered the first photo of their first-born child on their Web site on Christmas Day.

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. - Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz sure didn’t turn to the mags for money this holiday season — instead, they premiered the first photo of their first-born child on their Web site on Christmas Day.

The first picture of Bronx Mowgli Wentz, being cradled by mom and kissed by dad, showed up on their Web site, FriendsOrEnemies.com, in the form of a holiday e-card.

It is Christmas time, but there is little holiday cheer at the Stella D’Oro cookie factory in the Bronx. The 136 workers at the famous Italian biscuit company, members of the Bakery, Confectionary, Tobacco Workers, and Grain Millers (BCTGM) International Union Local 50, have now been on strike for more than four months and it may be several more before they head back to work. The workers’ contract extension expired at the end of July and Local 50 called the strike when the owners walked out of negotiations on August 13.

Workers at the plant are disappointed that their dispute with management could not be resolved before the holidays. Read more..

Egan brings holiday cheer to Bronx

Edward Cardinal Egan stood in superbly for Santa Claus on Tuesday, showering kids and their parents at a Bronx immigration center with gifts, song and Christmas cheer to the delight of all.

“Just call me Santa Claus,” the cardinal announced to about 40 youngsters at St. Rita’s Immigration Center in University Heights, who promptly broke into smiles, gathered around him and took turns sitting on his lap.

Later, it was Egan’s turn to smile as the children serenaded him with holiday songs including “Feliz Navidad” - Spanish for Merry Christmas.

The cardinal said he was delighted to help anyone in need but noted that gift giving shouldn’t just be a holiday thing.

“Some young kids need help all year,” Egan said. “It’s important to help out where you can.”

One of Santa Egan’s helpers was Tim Rooney, president of Yonkers Raceway, who donated some of the toys. Read more..

Away in a Manger in the South Bronx

Presepio

Since 2000, the folklorist Joseph Sciorra has built a presepio in his Brooklyn kitchen. His take on this traditional Italian Nativity scene reflects more modern settings like Baghdad or a Caribbean beach. This year, he set the crèche in the South Bronx of 1975

For the past few weeks, Joseph Sciorra has been painstakingly putting together a tabletop tableau of the South Bronx circa 1975. Subway cars slathered with graffiti are set against bombed-out tenements and empty lots. An empty lot is covered with broken bricks and a battered mattress, and a charred car is abandoned by the curb. He added the final touch this week:

Jesus, Mary and Joseph

This is not an exclamation, but a partial roster

They are joined by the Three Kings, some stable creatures, shepherds and angels on high. Read more..
