It used to be that if you wanted to rent a fishing dinghy in New York City, you went to Rosenberger Boat Livery on City Island in the Bronx, a fishing station that also had perhaps the saltiest bar in the city.
This blue-collar fisherman’s paradise was rich in character and characters and was one of the last remaining fishing stations in New York. According to local lore, it had been in operation for 125 years, making it perhaps the longest-running fishing outpost of its kind in the country.
Well, that’s all over now. Rosenberger has gone into receivership and “Trader” John Persteins, the livery’s skipper for the past 15 years, has retreated down City Island Avenue and is now selling nautical antiques out of a little shop.
“It’s a shame, because we were really the last place a working man could come with his family and take out a boat to fish,” Mr. Persteins said. “You had a lot of families coming to the livery for generations.” Read more..
