Jeter’s Leaders pack holiday gifts in Bronx

Jeter tops Wright for charity

Derek Jeter accepts a $100,000 donation from Delta for his Turn 2 Foundation after compiling a higher batting average than David Wright

The sounds of the seasons were echoing through the hallways of Yankee Stadium on Thursday evening, as Derek Jeter helped pack Yankees knapsacks full of goodies that will soon be delivered into the hands of appreciative children.

Behind a sound system blaring holiday hits, Jeter was joined by dozens of helpers from his Turn 2 Foundation, wearing ‘Jeter’s Leaders’ pinstriped jerseys and festive red and green caps. The high schoolers tore through box after box to assemble gift bags and create a happier holiday for many.

“This is the fun time, especially with the foundation,” Jeter said. “This is when you get a chance to see all the kids that you’ve been working with, going through the programs. I always enjoy the holiday season.”

Jeter’s ‘Turn 2 Holiday Express’ is one of the activities created to reward children involved in Turn 2’s Signature Programs, who are demonstrating positive behavior, academic excellence, and leadership qualities in school and their communities.

Approximately 1,000 gift bags were packed during the session in the Bronx, containing items donated by the Yankees and sponsors of the foundation. After their work was complete, Jeter’s Leaders were welcomed in Yankee Stadium’s Delta Sky 360 suite for a private party with the Yankees captain. Read more..

Despite Bronx beating against Yankees, Mets’ hopes start and end with Johan Santana

In recent weeks Mets fans told themselves it was nothing to worry about, like that first hint of a sore throat you tell yourself won’t turn into something worse. Yeah, sure, Johan Santana had been a bit off his game, but still, he’s Johan Santana.

Only now you can’t pretend anymore. Now the sore throat has turned into a fever and body aches, and you’re just hoping you don’t have the swine flu.

The Mets, after all, have hung tough in the face of all the injuries, all the bad base running, all the killer losses, but if there’s one thing they can’t survive it’s Santana at less than his best for more than the occasional start here and there.

It would be a lot easier to shrug off the beating Santana took in Sunday’s 15-0 loss to the Yankees if it came completely out of nowhere. But in truth, it’s been awhile since the Mets’ ace approached the form that made him so untouchable the first month or so of the season.

In his last six starts his ERA is 6.50. And this one, in which he allowed a career-high nine runs, comes on the heels of giving up a career-high four home runs against the Phillies in Citi Field last week. Read more..

Mets’ Wright: You can’t ever condone cheating

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - In a comparison of New York’s third basemen, it’s no contest. Alex Rodriguez is a three-time MVP, a 12-time All-Star and the favorite to one day wrest the home run crown from the head of Barry Bonds.

Then there is David Wright, whose still blossoming career is not tainted by the use of performance-enhancing drugs. That type of integrity, that purity, is something that A-Rod can never get back, never erase, no matter how many home runs he hits or how many trophies he collects.

Wright, at the age of 26, understands that and seeing A-Rod’s confession before a national television audience on Monday night brought to mind the consequences of bad decisions. Though Wright was leery of talking too much about his Bronx counterpart, he clearly was torn between his obvious disgust for cheaters and a somewhat fractured admiration for A-Rod.

“You can’t ever condone using banned substances,” Wright said. “You can’t ever condone cheating. But with that being said, I think he did a tremendous job owning up to it and I think his apology was sincere. Kids and fans alike can look at the mistake he made and take positives from that and learn from that. When you have a guy like that who sits down and shows that kind of emotion, is apologetic and admits that he made a mistake - it takes a man to do that.” Read more..
