Rebuilding Harris Field, a 15-acre park in the Bedford Park section of the Bronx, is going to cost the city almost $14 million, the Post reported. The city’s renovation of the park and its six playing fields was announced in 2007 with an estimated cost of $6.6 million, which was later upped to $8.7 million. The latest price increase — which represents a 110 percent cost overrun — is due to high levels of lead, found by workers who were trying to install tanks for drainage at the site. The Department of Parks & Recreation said it needs the additional $5.2 million to remove the contamination before replacing grass with artificial turf on two of the fields. According to the city’s Web site, the Harris Field project is slated for completion in the spring, but it was not immediately clear whether the contamination would delay the end date.

The Bronx Culture Trolley rolls again on Wednesday, July 1, along South Bronx Cultural Corridor with an evening full of family activities. The evening features six art exhibitions at: Longwood Art Gallery at Hostos, Bronx Museum of the Arts, Synthetic Zero Art Space, LDR Studio Gallery, and Bruckner Gallery at the Bruckner Bar & Grill. The evening will also include a book signing at the Bronx Museum, a visit to the outdoor Tree Museum, a trip to the Alexander Avenue Art and Antiques District, an outdoor literary reading at St. Mary’s Park, and a karaoke after-party at the Bruckner Bar & Grill. The Bronx Culture Trolley is a program of the Bronx Council on the Arts (BCA). Admission to most activities is free and all are welcome to hop on board and enjoy them. Read more..

All-Out Effort For A Greener Bronx

All around the borough, Bronxites were thinking green and doing their part Tuesday for Earth Day.

In the South Bronx, more than 200 volunteers celebrated by planting trees, shrubs and perennials in five community areas.

The event was in support of PlaNYC’s goal of planting one million trees throughout the five boroughs by 2017, and officially kicked off the Timberland Company’s plan to “green” 300 communities worldwide.

The effort will help “create the first truly sustainable 21st century city - what we call a greener, greater New York,” said Liam Kavanagh of the city Department of Parks & Recreation.

At Middle School 391 in Tremont, the celebration will last all week long.

Together with the Bronx Overall Development Council, more than 30 students, parents and school officials showed up at the school at 2225 Webster Ave. to blanket the concrete rooftop with 20 pine trees and plants.

“We are the first in the community to do this,” said Middle School 391 teacher Vic Madho. “It’s very avant-garde.”

The school’s Eco-Green team will take care of the garden, and the project will be incorporated into science lessons.

Later this week, with the help of the nonprofit PHIPPS, students will paint the school foyer and redecorate selected bathrooms in the building. Read more..
