In Separate Episodes, 2 Are Shot by the Police

Police officers were involved in two shootings Friday, one of a 15-year-old boy the police said was brandishing a fake gun, the other of a man they said was trying to steal an officer’s car.

In the first episode, about 5 p.m., a police officer assigned to a narcotics unit watched an argument between two groups of men near Burke Avenue and Holland Street in the Olinville section of the Bronx. A 15-year-old boy with one group waved what appeared to be a gun, but ran away when he was taunted by men in the other group, the police said.

The officer, whom the police did not identify, joined by another officer, chased the boy and fired one shot, striking the boy in the left cheek, the police said. An imitation gun was recovered at the scene. The boy was taken to Jacobi Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition, and was charged with menacing and possessing an imitation pistol.

In the second shooting, about 6:25 in East New York, Brooklyn, an off-duty officer sitting in a parked car was ordered out of the car at gunpoint by Norman Harrison, 25, the police said. The officer, whom the police refused to identify except to say that he had been in the department for less than three years, fired one shot, hitting Mr. Harrison in the right shoulder.

Mr. Harrison fled, and hid out in an apartment for more than an hour before surrendering. He was charged with robbery, the police said. Read more..

Child is rescued by neighbor Horia Cretan, known locally as “Billy.”

Horia Cretan’s bravery knows no bounds.

One day after the Good Samaritan pulled a 4-year-old boy from a burning Bronx building, he took a knee Thursday morning and proposed to his girlfriend - on live national television.

And she said yes.

“You know that I’m a handful already, we both know that,” Cretan said on ABC’s “Good Morning America” program. “I promise you one thing, there’s never going to be a dull moment.

“So therefore will you marry me anyway?”

His girlfriend, after agreeing, shared a kiss and a long hug with her new fiancee.

“You’re crazy, you know that?” she asked. “Yes,” he replied. Read more..

Bronx blaze shutters shops

A three-alarm blaze engulfed most of a Bronx block early Sunday, destroying a row of businesses, officials and witnesses said.

The fire ignited just after 1 a.m. and spread quickly through several one-story buildings on White Plains Road between E. 235th and E. 236th Sts., officials said.

More than 140 firefighters were needed to battle the stubborn fire.

The buildings share a cockloft - space above the ceilings but below the roof - enabling the flames to jump from store to store, FDNY officials said.

By the time the fire was extinguished at 2:50 a.m., multiple stores, including a deli, a computer repair store and a Caribbean restaurant, were gutted.

“We’re tax accountants! We were ready for the tax season,” said a mournful Alfred Simms, manager of an accounting firm damaged in the blaze.

No one was injured in the blaze. The cause of the fire remained under investigation late yesterday, FDNY officials said.

Business owners said another fire ignited on the block last December and FDNY marshals had deemed it an act of arson. Read more..

A Game of Inches

A quiet preseason day at Stan’s Sports Bar, long a central watering hole for Yankee fans

THIRTY feet. That is the distance between the entrance of Stan’s Sports Bar at 158th Street and River Avenue and the faded black sign affixed to the side of Yankee Stadium that says “Bleacher Entrance.” It is a third of the length between first and second base, easy strolling distance for the droves of Yankee fans who crowded in religiously each baseball season.

And for 30 years, this archetypal American sports bar, with wooden baseball bats as its door handles and sketches of Mickey Mantle and Lou Gehrig on its walls, has been a prime piece of Bronx real estate.

Until the Yankees moved across the street, and then it wasn’t.
