Yankees fans get free pass at Stadium

The best pitch that baseball fan José Naumann has seen all year was the one that got him into Yankee Stadium yesterday for free.

Naumann said he had yet to see a game at the new ballpark because of the cost.

But as the Yankees played the Angels 3,000 miles away in California, he was one of thousands of fans allowed to watch Game 3 of the American League Championship Series on the Stadium’s giant, high-definition video screen.

“It’s a really amazing place, and it’s really great that people can come in and see it,” said Naumann, 44, a contractor, who brought his 10-year-old twins, Melissa and Chris.

“I don’t think I’d be able to come otherwise. I can’t afford it normally. It’s already been $30 for a couple of pizzas and drinks.”

In addition to chowing down on ballpark food, fans got to see 11 innings of baseball, but the Bronx Bombers lost, 5-4. They still lead the best-of-seven series, 2-1.

“Even though we lost, at least the management gave us the chance to be here,” said Albert Pergjokaj 32, of The Bronx.

“We’re gonna take it all.” Read more..

The cheaper seats

9/29/09 Kansas City Royals vs New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium - A fan stands next to the new $75.00 seats at Yankee Stadium.

9/29/09 Kansas City Royals vs New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium - A fan stands next to the new $75.00 seats at Yankee Stadium.

You’ll no longer have to mortgage your house to buy the best seats at Yankee Stadium next season, but you may still have to sell your car.

The Bronx Bombers are dropping prices in 2010 for their most expensive seats. The top-priced Legends Suite seats, which cost as much as $2,500 at the start of this season, will go for up to $1,500 next year.

They’re also reclassifying about a quarter of the Legend Suites to create a section called the Champions Suite.

While the Legends Suite seats, which cost $850 to $2,500 at the start of the season, will be cheaper, they’ll still cost a hefty $650 to $1,500 next year.

An April price cut of the 48 first-row seats in the Legends section dropped them to $1,250 a piece. Season-ticket holders who had already purchased $2,500 seats were given extra tickets to make up for the discount. The team also lowered the price of 68 less expensive seats in the section from $1,000 to $650. Read more..

Muhammad Ali waves to cheering crowd in the Bronx, site of his 1976 title defense against Ken Norton

“The Greatest” was back at Yankee Stadium Thursday night, and we’re not talking about the 1927 Yankees or the even the ‘98 team.

Muhammad Ali, who defended his heavyweight title at the old Yankee Stadium by beating Ken Norton in 1976, presented two hospitality awards to Hal Steinbrenner and the Yanks in a ceremony before their series- opening victory against Boston.

The 67-year-old former champ, wearing a blue shirt and sporting sunglasses, also posed for pictures flanked by Yankee players and rode around the field in a golf cart, waving to cheering fans as music blared and highlights of his fights played on the scoreboard. A cluster of fans chanted, “Ali, Ali” and he smiled and waved. Near home plate, Ali, who suffers from Parkinson’s disease, sat on a stool.

“It doesn’t get much better than that,” Steinbrenner said of meeting Ali. “His legacy just transcends generations and that was proof. It’s great to have him here, an honor. The man was a legend in so many ways, in and out of the ring.”

Yankees to play Cubs in first exhibition at new park

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The New York Yankees will play their first exhibition games at the new Yankee Stadium against the Chicago Cubs on April 3-4, the team announced on Monday.

The Friday-Saturday clashes will be the Yankees’ first pre-season exhibition games in the Bronx for 15 years.

“As we welcome our fans into the ballpark for the first time, it is fitting to showcase two of baseball’s greatest and most historic franchises,” Yankees co-owner Hal Steinbrenner said in a statement.

The two-game exhibition marks the return of 2008 National League manager-of-the-year Lou Piniella, who played outfield at Yankee Stadium for 11 seasons, was a member of two World Series championship teams and served as Yankees’ manager from 1986-88. Read more..
