Loser Philly mayor painting our town

Oh, the humiliation!

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter suited up in Yankee pinstripes yesterday after his team was routed by the Bronx Bombers in the World Series — although it was for a good cause.

Nutter’s shirt bore No. 55 — in honor of Series MVP Hideki Matsui — when he painted some hallways at IS 131 in The Bronx. The paint job at the Soundview school was the price Nutter paid for losing his World Series bet with Mayor Bloomberg.

“I wish we were doing this in Philadelphia,” said the disappointed Phillies fanatic as he took a break from slathering green paint on the school’s walls.

Mayor Bloomberg was also wearing a Yankee jersey — No. 27, signifying the Bombers’ 27th world championship.

“I’m looking forward to having Mayor Nutter here next year, painting another school,” he said.

Afterward, the mayors autographed their jerseys and gave them to school Principal Ed Leotta. Read more..

Joe Torre Fuels His Foundation With Bronx Bomber Power

Former Yankees manager Joe Torre got some help from his old players to raise money for his Safe At Home Foundation.

Yankee reliever Mariano Rivera was the guest of honor at the seventh annual event at Chelsea Piers on Friday.

The foundation raises money to create safe rooms in area schools where students can seek help in cases of domestic violence.

“I never was hit by my dad but my mom, you know, felt the abuse,” said Torre. “But I had a lot of scars, just knowing stuff was going on in my house and I grew up as a very nervous kid.”

“You know, he’s taken his experiences growing up and taken that opportunity to give back and raise awareness and it’s very difficult to do,” said Yankees team captain Derek Jeter. “And I’m sure its very difficult for him to share his stories. But he’s turned that negative into a positive.” Read more..

Yankees’ parade one for the fans

World Series MVP Hideki Matsui shows off his key to the city Friday during the festivities honoring the Yankees.

World Series MVP Hideki Matsui shows off his key to the city Friday during the festivities honoring the Yankees.

As Howie Traudt and his family rode down on the train Friday morning to attend the Yankees’ World Series celebration parade, he knew what awaited countless fans like himself.

“Pandemonium,”?the Rhinebeck resident said. “Absolute pandemonium.”

The Bronx Bombers and the City of New York did not disappoint.

Players, coaches, legends and team officials soaked up the well wishes of a city this day, commemorating the Yankees’ first world championship since 2000.

“It feels good to be back,” shortstop and team captain Derek Jeter said when the parade reached City Hall, where the Yanks received a hero’s welcome.

The Yankees and their fans earned this celebration with the team’s 27th World Series title, which the Yanks secured with a 7-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 6 on Wednesday night, some 36 hours before the start of Friday’s parade in lower Manhattan.

Winners of four world titles from 1996-2000, including three straight starting in 1998, the Yankees also reached the Fall Classic in 2001 and 2003, only to fall short each time. Read more..

The Bronx Bombers have spoiled us, but it’s still a thrill every time

Nothing less was expected. Nothing less was delivered. These are the Yankees. This is New York. They are the best, and that’s what this town mints: winners. If you don’t get it, enjoy your visit anyway.

Meanwhile, we’ll be out by the tens of thousands for a wild romp of a parade, an exuberant beat of the city’s great big heart.

Plenty spectacular it is that The Bombers inaugurated their handsome new Stadium by winning the 2009 World Series, the team’s 27th, before a home-field crowd.

And history doth repeat. The team won the first of its championships in the opening season of the old Stadium, way back in 1923. Ever since, the Yanks have topped baseball at an average of once every three years.

No one else comes close. Hell, add up the Series wins of the teams in each Major League division, and the only division with more than the Yanks is the one they are in, the AL East. The team has won more than a quarter of the World Series ever played. And it’s a thrill every time. Read more..
