Man Dies in Bronx After Being Pinned by Construction Equipment

December 7th, 2007

A construction worker died this afternoon in the Bronx after his head got pinned between the side of a dump truck and the rear end of a backhoe around 12:45 p.m. today, according to city officials and a hospital spokesman.

The worker, whose name was not identified, was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital in traumatic arrest, and a hospital spokesman, Fred Winters, said the worker died shortly after being brought in.

According to the Fire Department, the accident occurred around East 179th Street and Hughes Avenue, in the East Tremont section of the Bronx. A dump truck was at the edge of the hole, and workers were preparing to fill in the hole, when a backhoe operator swung the boom of his machine around. The backhoe operator apparently did not see the worker, whose head got caught between the side of the dump truck and the rear end of the backhoe. After the boom was moved out of the way, the man fell into the eight-foot-deep hole.
