South Bronx building gets green treatment for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity helps install a green roof on the Fox-Leggett Co-op Apartments in the South Bronx. Habitat for Humanity helps install a green roof on the Fox-Leggett Co-op Apartments in the South Bronx.

Habitat for Humanity is breaking new ground - unveiling its first-ever “green roof” in the South Bronx on Wednesday.

The 2,400-square-foot carpet of flowering sedum plants atop the Fox-Leggett Co-op Apartments will insulate the building from the summer sun and absorb an inch of rainfall.

“Green roofs save money and are healthier,” said Josh Lockwood, executive director of Habitat for Humanity/New York City.

“These are such critical elements for low-income families, especially in the Bronx, which has the highest incidence of childhood asthma in the five boroughs.”

Barbara Vargas, who is buying a three-bedroom Habitat apartment for herself and her two kids, spent the morning placing sedums in 4 inches of shale on top of asphalt and a root barrier made of rigid board.

“You can hang out with friends up here,” said Vargas, 41, who now lives in the West Farms section of the Bronx. “It will give them something to talk about.”

Eleven volunteers from Delta Air Lines helped on the green roof installation, and the airline is kicking in $120,000 to sponsor one Habitat apartment. Read more..

PSAL softball round-up: Science wins slugfest with RKA

Bronx Science had no reason to pitch to Riverdale/Kingsbridge junior shortstop Nelyssa Rosario. Not in the fourth inning. Not with two runners on. Not ahead by four runs.

“She’s just an unbelievable hitter,” Wolverines coach Tom Morris said.

So, Morris called for pitcher Kelly Chewens to intentionally walk Rosario. The sophomore hurler had the right idea on the first pitch, but the second one she threw directly over the plate and Rosario belted a three-run home run.

RKA got within one run on the homer, then took the lead in the fifth, but Bronx Science tied the game up in the sixth and went ahead in the seventh in what was a wild, 14-11 road win against Riverdale/Kingsbridge on Tuesday in PSAL Bronx A softball.

“It was a lot closer than it needed to be,” Morris said. Read more..

Riverdale/Kingsbridge soars to top of Bronx B North

The Morris and Jane Addams baseball teams have had their ups and down since moving up to Class A, winning their fair share of league games but also seeing the losses pile up. Overall, each coach has said, the change has benefited his program.

Riverdale/Kingsbridge is just as happy.

The Tigers, without those two rivals to deal with, have enjoyed quite a season. They are 9-0, all alone in first place in Bronx B North, two games clear of second-place Bronx Science.

Coach Mac Psachie credits basic winning tenets – pitching and defense – for his team’s continued success. Read more..

Wings soar past South Bronx, turn attention to JFK

Guard Dashaun Wiggins scored 34 points to lead Wings Academy past South Bronx, 103-84, in the Bronx borough semifinals

Dashaun Wiggins was still licking his wounds days after one of the worst losses of his young career, when his spirits were suddenly lifted.

He was heading back to his apartment in the Hunts Point section of the Bronx when he ran into Julio Gonzalez, a local boxing trainer Wiggins spars with during the summer to stay in shape. Gonzalez heard of the lopsided defeat, a 23-point blowout to John F. Kennedy on Jan. 22, and offered his advice.

“Sometimes a good boxer needs to get knocked out,” Gonzalez said. Read more..

PSAL boys’ basketball Bronx playoff preview

That’s not an indictment of the other seven participants; it’s praise for Kennedy.

No. 2 Wings Academy has righted the ship recently, playing better on the defensive end. No. 3 Truman got better as the year went on and No. 4 Lehman has a dynamic inside-out duo in center Armand (Big Baby) Thomas and guard Aaron Barnes. Class A high-scoring entrants South Bronx, Evander Childs and Taft could make trouble for the higher seeds as well.

Favorite: No. 1 John F. Kennedy Read more..
