Introducing the Whopper Bar

Burger King is unveiling its Whopper Bar, where customers can have a beer to go along with their fries.Burger King is unveiling its Whopper Bar, where customers can have a beer to go along with their fries.

Hoping to tap a whole new customer base, the fast food chain has unveiled plans to peddle beer alongside their famous burgers at something they are calling a Whopper Bar.

The first one is opening in Miami Beach and will target thirsty tourists hitting South Beach, Burger King confirmed.

The chain is also reportedly looking to open more Whopper Bars in other tourist meccas like Times Square, as well as Las Vegas and Los Angeles.

Don’t look for exotic brews - BK is starting out with domestic brands like Miller at Budweiser and will consider other beers down the road.

“You can have America’s favorite beers with America’s favorite burger,” said Chuck Fallon, the chain’s North America honcho.

Served in specially designed aluminum bottles, a BK beer will sell for $4.25 alone. And a Whopper combo with a beer will run $7.99, which is about $2 more than the same meal with a soda.

Burger King’s beer n’ burgers idea got mixed reviews from New Yorkers.

Arnold Lyons, 58, of the Bronx, said he didn’t think it was a good idea because so many kids eat at Burger King. Read more..

In the Bronx, Less Asphalt, More Vegetables

Garden Teenagers in an urban gardening program tearing up the asphalt at Brook Park in the Bronx. They’re planning to plant more vegetables to donate to local residents

A symphony of dull thuds and sharp clanks heralded — what else? — the planting season at Brook Park in the Bronx. Teenagers took turns swinging sledgehammers and pickaxes as they tore up the remains of an ancient basketball court inside the Mott Haven park, where they have already planted eight large boxes now bursting with tomatoes, peppers, greens and other natural goodies.

“This used to be a parking lot,” said Raymond Figueroa, a program coordinator with Aspira, the youth group sponsoring the urban planting. “We’re opening up the asphalt so we can plant some more.”

And before you could ask, he launched into a list of the stuff they had already planted earlier this year.

“We got tomatoes,” he said. “We got eggplants. We got peppers. We got collard greens. We already did one harvest, which we donated to a food pantry that feeds 500 people.” Read more..

Curtis Sliwa South Bronx tour offers participants view of city’s former ‘underbelly’

Curtis Sliwa Curtis Sliwa

Tourists hungry for a peek at the real New York can skip Times Square and Central Park and head for the South Bronx instead.

Radio host Curtis Sliwa is leading out-of-towners on three-hour walking tours of the once crime-ridden neighborhood to give them a firsthand look at what it was like and how it has changed.

“The Bronx has improved dramatically, but you can get a flavor of what it was like,” said Sliwa, founder of the Guardian Angels. “It’s an opportunity to see the old and the new.”

So far, about 125 people have taken the tour, which was first reported by Crain New York Business.

Sliwa, who has also flirted with running for public advocate, says his so-called “Underbelly Tour” is a must-do attraction for those looking to get beyond the glitz of the world’s most intriguing city.

“I show them, this is where there used to be burned-out buildings, gangs, drug dealers,” Sliwa said. “You see a burned-out building with graffiti and right next to it you see a brand-new place and thriving businesses.” Read more..
