Bronx adds 18 new schools

The start of school is just around the corner.

The start of school is just around the corner

No doubt students across the Bronx are enjoying one last day of summer freedom before school doors open on Wednesday.

The new school year brings 18 new schools to the Bronx - including four charter schools - five elementary schools, seven middle schools and two high schools.

“These new schools will give families in the Bronx more choices,” said Department of Education spokeswoman Melody Meyer. “The new schools we’ve opened across the borough over the past seven years have done exceptionally well in helping students succeed,” she continued, “and so we look to continue that success.”

Among the new school programs is the Creston Academy at 120 E. 184th St. in Fordham, one of two small middle schools with about 100 sixth-graders to replace failing Middle School 399.

According to Insideschools.org, the school will focus “on issues unique to adolescence” to help keep students engaged.

The Carl C. Icahn elementary charter school in the James Monroe Annex at 1551 E. 172nd St. in Bronx River will open with about 100 kindergarten through second-graders.

It is modeled after the original Icahn Charter School, which opened in Tremont in 2001. The Icahn schools have been praised for high academic performance, small classes and extended classroom hours, with waiting lists to get in.

Another sought-after program is the Girls Prep Charter School of South Bronx, at 681 Kelly St. in Longwood.

“This is already a very successful charter school on the lower East Side in Manhattan,” Meyer said. “Many Bronx parents might not know about it, but it’s very much a high-demand school.”

For parents, the borough president’s office has partnered with the nonprofit Advocates for Children to host a series of education workshops this fall.

The first workshop, General Education: Rights of Students and Parents, will cover enrollment, transfer and transportation, and voluntary and involuntary transfers and discharges.

The workshop will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sept. 21 at the Bronx County Courthouse, 851 Grand Concourse, first floor. For more information, call Jesse Mojica at the borough president’s office at (718) 590-3515.

Chad Gaudin a winner in first appearance for Yankees

Righty Chad Gaudin won his Yankee debut Wednesday, throwing two scoreless innings against the Blue Jays in an experience he said “words can’t explain.

“That’s what this game is about, finding what’s inside you,” said Gaudin, who allowed one hit and one walk while striking out three. The Yankees were prepared to let Gaudin throw as many as 85 pitches in extra innings, but were also happy he tossed only 44 because he is likely to start Sunday in Seattle.

“I knew I hadn’t pitched in a week, so I knew I could be stretched out there. I was ready to go the distance,” Gaudin said. “It’s big. Your first outing, first impression is usually pretty big. Everybody wishes for the same opportunity, and I got it, and it all worked out.”

BRONX CHEERS: Randy Ruiz says the homer he hit at the old Yankee Stadium doesn’t count since the Bronx product hit it while in high school at James Monroe. However, the two home runs Toronto’s infielder hit Tuesday and Wednesday at the new Yankee Stadium, however, certainly counted.

Playing in his hometown and in front of his friends and family after being called up Tuesday from Triple-A to replace Alex Rios, the 31-year-old smacked two home runs for the Blue Jays and went 3-for-9 over the two days. Ruiz’s two home runs were only the second and third of his career, which has involved bouncing around minor-league teams and two failed steroids tests.

“It feels great (to hit the home runs) especially in front of the family,” Ruiz said. “Unfortunately we lost the game, but hopefully I can contribute more for the team and maybe when I get an opportunity with runners in scoring position I can drive them in next time.” Read more..

Bronx school library long overdue

Lack of a school library puts senior Luis Figueroa at a disadvantage.

Lack of a school library puts senior Luis Figueroa at a disadvantage.

Hundreds of Bronx high school students have been unable to use their library for more than a year because of renovations - and now it’s being stripped of books, computers and furniture.

School Construction Authority architects showed school staff renovation plans in the spring of 2007. Renovations were to be performed during the summer so that the library would be ready to open in the fall of that year, but the work has not begun. Read more..

Bronx PSAL Boys Basketball Preview

Wings Academy has won six straight division titles and the last three borough crowns. But the 2007-08 team features eight new players and will have to fend off battle-tested Kennedy if it wants to keep both the division and borough streaks alive. The Knights return all but one player from their 2007 squad, which lost to Lincoln in the PSAL quarterfinals. Wings is 5-0 against the Knights over the past three seasons, but that streak could be in jeopardy on Tuesday when the two teams face off in the season opener at Gauchos Gym.

Wings ready to fly sky high

Seven Wings newcomers sprinted, jumped and dribbled their way through drills on Sunday at the Forest Houses gym, trying to get in a few extra hours of practice before Tuesday’s season-opener at Kennedy.

Last season’s starting five is gone, but Wings coaches and players believe it’s only a matter of time before this year’s group gets off the ground.

The general sentiment at the gym; Billy Turnage’s squad will be at top cruising altitude by January, just in time for its annual ascent to the borough crown.
